New Open University Course: You and Your Money: Personal Finance in Context

Just browsing the Open University's new courses for the coming year, and came across one that might be of interest to money-savers:

You and Your Money: Personal Finance in Context

http://www3.open.ac.uk/courses/bin/p12.dll?C01DB123

A fuller description will be provided closer to the start date in November 2006.

In brief, this is at first year university level. No entry requirements, and it will be designed to help you develop your study skills. 30 points = 300 hours of study, over about six months = about 10 hours a week.

Even better: if you don't have a first degree, and are on a low income (under 15k for single students), you should be able to do this (or any other) course for free - and in England, Wales & NI you may even get a £250 grant. Full details of help:

If you have any queries about OU study, ask here or PM me - I'm just finishing off my degree at the moment

If anyone is interested in this topic but not going to take the course then this book might be of interest. It is written by the course organisers and I think is going to be the 'core' text for the module.

  • Hi,
I am one of the Co-Chairs of the aforementioned course and an editor of the book Personal Finance. There are now over 550 students registered for the November course start in 2006, but if anyone wants to register they should note the closing date is October 16th so do bear in that in mind. If anyone has any course specific questions I would be happy to answer them. The course has had contributions from both learning specialists and personal finance experts and aims to combine the practical 'nuts and bolts' with an understanding of the broader social and economic context in which financial decisions are made, giving a more complete understanding of personal finance. As well as the book students getand an interactive dvd rom. It is part time over 6 months and students get the support of a designated tutor with the option of tutorials to meet other students.
    Best Wishes
    Martin
