Car Insurance - About To Be Deployed?

Hi all,

Being only days away from my 2nd tour Afghan this time, i contacted my insurance company to see if any discounts were to be had. After all i'd be leaving the country for 6 months and my car would be stationary and secured on camp.

I was pleased to hear that they could change my policy to 3rd Party, Fire & Theft. And offer a massive 75% premium rebate when i returned for the months i was away. I pay £149 a month and this is great. I pay the full amount as usual, then when i return i claim the rebate. I have this now sent out to me in writing to confirm this.

Just thought i'd share this as i have saved quite a bit, and still will recieve and extra years no claims. The term the insurance company used was "Laid Up". Might help if you mention that.

Doesn't sound such a good deal to me. I think I'll stick with my £160 a year, fully comp with protected NCB.

  • My premium isnt cheap as im 22 and i drive a lexus.

The aim was to highlight that if you were deploying and your insurance was high, as mine is. You could save money.

  • ouch ... £1800 a year for car insurance.
Make sure your motor's safe if you've reduced to third party cover though!

He said third party, fire & theft. But still good advice.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • I know he said TPFT .... Still doesn't give you any money if someone vandalises or drives into your car. If I drove a Lexus I would want to make sure its covered - especially if I was hard up for cash.
  • The chances of someone vandalising my car are very slim. As is someone driving into it. Yes i cant guarantee that but i think the saving of £670 and an additional 1 Years NCB out weigh the risk.
