Hi, Loads to see.
Jorvik centre, Castle museum, Clifton tower, Railway museum, York eye, York minster, Shambles. Brilliant shops, York designer outlet is good. I'm sure there will be loads more on a York tourist information site.0 -
Boat ride is good too, and all the things fruity1 mentioned although i think the York Eye is no more sadly.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Went to York for a weekend break a little while ago and had a gorgeous meal at Meltons Too. The prices were really reasonable and the food delicious :-) They have a website so if you check on there they might have 'early bird' deals or something similar. On the Sunday morning went to a cracking butchers in the city cetre called Scotts and got some yummy hot pork buns to wonder round with.
We we're quite disappointed the Yorvik centre, it was quite expensive for what it was. Went on a tour of York Brewery which was interesting and included a drink afterwards! I think the highlight of our trip was going on one of the Ghost Tours, I can't remember the name of the one we chose (there are loads to choose from!) but it started from The Shambles each night. It was great fun and lots of audience participation! I also spent a nice afternoon taking photos of York Minster, walking the city walls and exploring the parks around the city.
Hope you enjoy your trip as much as I did!!0 -
I would second a ghost tour!
From now on there will be different events each weekend in York leading up to Christmas - we have different markets each weekend, and there is an ice festival one weekend that is marvellous.
Sadly I think Scotts the butchers is no more.
Eating out - there is something for everyone. Meltons Too is good but the service can be a bit lack lustre. There is a York tradition called Oscars which has a heated outside eating area, and their posh older brother is the Biltmore which is a converted chapel and does good food ( as does Oscars) in a wine bar sort of style.
There is also a great place off Ousegate called 8 O'clock which is very good.
I think the tourist board website is very good and the local newspaper has a good section too - www.thisisyork.co.uk
If the weather isn't too icy a walk around the walls is a must - you see bits of York you wouldn't normally see and it is free! The Castle Museum is a good one if that is your sort of thing - there will probably be an ice rink outside there too when you get here. Just near Fenwicks opposite the Cliffords Tower. There are also free historical walks that set off from the Tourist Office in Exhibition square.
ALso there is the National Railway Museum, which is actually much better that it sounds....even girls who roll their eyes at boys things will like it ( I am one of those and I did!).
I would also visit the Minster as it is an amazing building - if you are around at 5ish the evening vespers is a lovely service sung by the Minster Song school choir, and religious or not, it is lovely to sit in an amazing building and just have 20 minutes of peace.
There is something for everybody so I would look at some York websites, and maybe call at the Tourist office when you get there - most hotels have a really comprehensive info pack anyway, but overall you will have a great time!
Enjoy!
PS The official York website is

Betty's is a must!0 -
I was in York a couple of weeks ago and we had a delicious cream tea at a National Trust property cafe. It was the Treasurer's House I think. It was not crowded and was extremely civilised. Very English IYKWIM.0

The ice rink will be open then - ist lovely. The castle museum is fun, dont bother with the dungeons - its dull. Walk round the walls, go on a ghost tour, look for peacock in the Museum Gardens, visit the Art Gallery. For food, Plonkers is a nice bar with good food, and for an olde worlde pub the Guy Fawkes in near the minster is good.Cogito ergo sum. Google it you lazy sod !!0
