Basically what has happened is that the MBR has become corrupt. Usually this can be fixed quite easily.

Do you have your windows 2000 CD?
  • hi no i havent got a cd because it was second hand
is there anywhere i can get one from
  • http://www.ambience.sk/fdisk-master-boot-record-windows-linux-lilo-fixmbr.php

    bottom half of the page.

this is a google search result and i've no experience with the software so it may or may not work.
Depends if the error is because of a damaged mbr or if the disk is on its way to silicon heaven.

Find a friend with a pc/laptop that's online and has a floppy disk drive, download the diskette software from the link above and use it to create a windows 95 bootdisk.

Boot your pc with it (either select 'boot options/menu' at the start screen, or enter setup and change the boot order/priority to FDD first) then when it reaches the A:>, type 'fdisk /mbr' with a space before the / and without the ''. This will re-create the master boot record.

Depends whether it is formatted as NTFS - win 95 bootdisks won't work. There is a link on that page that links to something called mbrfix, no idea how good it is though.

would this work being as ive got 2000 professional??
  • 1. Do not use a Win95 boot disc on Win2000.

    2. You will need a Win2000 installation CD. If you do not know someone who has one you can get them off Ebay, or try a local independent PC shop.

    3. Boot the PC from that CD. Once at the menu, press R for repair options. Try C for Recovery Console first and when in the console use the command chkdsk /r
That can take an hour to run. It will either say it has fixed errors, or that there is an unrecoverable error. If it says the latter, the hard drive will need replacing.

You really do need to repair those disk errors - you can reset the admin password using the following offline tool:

    http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Click on the Bootdisk button at the top and follow the instructions.

Probably the best way to get the driver for your modem is to examine it for the part number (starting with 3C.......) and then search for it in the 3com.com website support section.
