I noticed an opticians section in an Asda superstore yesterday. All the staff are actually employed by Asda. Their pricing seems like it could persuade me to come back to the High Street after previously buying contact lens over the Internet.

Boots and several other opticians price for a contact lens eye test is £25. D&A quoted even more at £30. But Asda charge only £15. Much better.

I presently buy monthy disposable soft contact lens over the Internet at about £35 for 6 months supply. Boots and several other opticians would be around double that price and demand that you sign up for direct debit commitments, etc.

Asda have quoted the same price as my Internet source for monthly contact lens, which seems far more reasonable (and still plenty of profit left for them, no doubt).

I should be grateful if other members could check this out and confirm or update these early observations.

    Regards
    George

I would like to confirm to all members that as a fellow asda worker, my partner has to have glasses with prisoms due to double vision and of course we do get 10% discount but also i have to add that they are willing to beat high street prices and they still do a vast range of contacts and designer glasses at the moment the have buy any two pairs of deginer glasses for £90 or any two pairs of normal glasses for £70 which i find fantastic and my friend {who doesnt work at asda} gets monthly contacts 6 months worth for just £30 which is £5 a month!

Best yet Asda is having a discount day at optiticans of 10% for all glasses and contacts on the 10th june 2008!! so Get in there while you can!!

hoya 1.7 plastic lenses inc anti glare + hardcoat £220
sola 1.66 vizzio lenses inc antiglare + hardcoat £115
sola standard lens inc hardcoat £20 :o

    contact lenses prices:
    ciba visitint monthly lenses £33 6 months supply ( 6 pairs )
    does not include solutions

ciba focus dailies £ 27 , 30 pairs of lenses

ciba freshlook colour blends/colours £10.50 per pair

c/l assesment is £15 includes trial of lenses either one monthly lens or 5 pairs daily lenses, also includes all subsequent aftercare visits, which other opticians sometimes charge £10/£15 a time for

    all in all v.cheap ;D

I'd be interested to know if those hoya 1.7/sola 1.66 prices can be beaten...

  • They may be cheaper but the after care is rubbish. You can never get an appointment and the be honest I don't think their service is worth anything.

  • I now know that ASDA is selling glasses at well under the prices of ANY other opticians and that the quality is at least as good as you can get anywhere. I'm not sure I believe it but it's definitely worth checking out. What a result for ASDA.
  • As of this morning, Asda have got a brand new range that is excellent. As well as the new range, Asda have finally done what the optical market needed, one simple complete price regardless of your prescription and the price includes an Anti-reflective coating. So for designer glasses single vision, its £70 for one pair and £90 for 2 pairs. If you need thinner lenses because of your prescription, you get them within this price. How fantastic is this?

For Kids, you can chose from 54 pairs of glasses which would be free with an NHS voucher including brands like Batman, Hannah Montanna, HSM. Every pair comes with a 100% UV filter and anti-reflective coating included at not extra cost.
