how do you stop a flashing cursor

a couple of days ago our cursor started flashing. it still works but annoying & sometimes it disappears for a while especially when stationary. if i hover on a thread it changes to a finger flashing & the text comes up flashing as well. it is a microsoft wireless optical mouse 2.0A. it happened a long time back but just righted itself when pc was switched off, but not this time. have tried new batteries as well.
