  • Chicken Sandwich
Tesco choc biscuit (like a penguin)
    Fruit Flakes
    Crisps
To drink one has lucozade and the other has HSM.
Ditch the Penguin and replace with a homemade flapjack or muffin (4-6p).

Swap the fruit flakes (not sure what these are) with actual fruit or handful of raisins.

Chuck the crisps or replace with homemade popcorn.

    Replace the drinks with water.

My 3 have cheese/ham/egg sandwiches or rolls, fruit, hm muffin/flapjack/biscuit/fruitcake, carrot sticks/cucumber/tomatoes and water

    2008 live on 4k +cb £6,247.98/£6282.80 :T
    sealed pot 2670g
    2009 target £4k + cb £643.89:eek: /£6412.80
  • Thanks everyone.

Well the penguin biscuit only works out between 4p-6p anyway as they will eat Tesco's own rather than branded biscuits.

They ate tesco crisps for a while but recently declared their loathing of them.

Fruit flakes (yoghurt covered dried fruit) is 38p a bag so costs me £3.80 a week.

Replacing the drinks with water or even squash would be great but they refuse to drink both....

My youngest ds who is in yr6 takes anything from this list:

Sandwich on muffin, bread or pitta - ham or cheese usually
Home popped popcorn in a little tub
Cherry tomatoes, sliced peppers, carrot sticks, tub of defrosted frozen sweetcorn
Homemade buns, flapjack, couple of biscuits (custard cream type), slice of HM cake
A piece of fresh fruit or chopped tinned fruit in natural juice in a little tub
If I get them on special offer he occassionally takes a tube yoghurt
    Apple & blackcurrant cordial

For a change he often takes a pasta salad made with leftover pasta, grated carrot, red onion, peppers, tomatoes, sweetcorn etc whatever I have in usually and he takes HM soup in a wide necked flask in the winter.

I try to ring the changes but usually its a sandwich/main course, a veg, a fruit, a sweet treat & a drink. I don't have the cost to hand but I know its cheaper than school dinners as he used to have these & I bought his stuff out of the same money to begin with to compare prices.
  • My DD used to have things such as:

Ham, Cheese or Marmite sarnies (reduced bread then freeze the sarnies in bulk)
    HM Sausage Rolls
    Chicken Pasta or rice salad
    Chicken Leg (leftovers)
    Quiche (HM)
    Crisps
    Fruit (fresh or dried)
    water
    Yogurt

    PP
    xx

My kids are wanting school lunches at the moment. At £1.60 for all of them though, that's £6.40 per day!!!!

They are sick of the Sandwich/crisps/fruit combo though. So, my plans are to update this a little. No crisps, for a start :D

    Home made sausage rolls.
    Pasta salads.
    Home made pasties.
Home made bread rolls for sandwiches (they'll eat this where they aren't fond of shop bought bread..but a hm bread loaf doesn't last five minutes in this house)
    Buns.
    Fruit cake.
    Mini pizza
    Quiche
Wraps.....how on earth do you do those things? Mine fall apart!
Fruit and veg (apples/carrot sticks/celery etc)
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

Don't throw away food challenge started 30/10/11 £4.45 wasted.

    Storecard balance -[STRIKE] £786.60[/STRIKE] £708

Wraps.....how on earth do you do those things? Mine fall apart!

I lay the wrap on the worktop and spread wet stuff (mayo, tom sauce, grated carrot etc) all over it. Then if you imagine the wrap in half horizontally you want to put the meat/cheese/fish on the middle third of the top half. Fold the bottom horizontal half up so it meets the top of the wrap (so you've got a semi circle) then fold the sides in together IYKWIM ;) I also find that they stay together better by making them the night before & wrapping them very tightly in clingfilm :D

I'm sure someone with a better grasp of instructions than me will be able to make it clearer :T
  • Hi guys Im wondering if you can help?
Me and my husband have been lucky enough to concieve a suprise baby (we have a 5year old) BUT money is going to be incredably tight.
I have checked one of those budget planners but theres not much room for movement as everything we have is on fixed terms so to speak.

    My question is this...#
My little girl is asking for packed lunches she's currently on school dinners...do pack lunches work out cheaper or more expensive? They cost £7 per week at the minute ALSO has anyone any tips on how to make them more exciting? and still nutrious?

Also Im going to keep her at home over the summer holidays to save money really is there anything we can do to keep her happy but doesn't cost a small fortune?
    Activities etc etc??

    Thank you in advance :)

i would say packed lunch would be cheaper than school dinner i put in my sons (hes 9) a sarnie(tuna or ham or peanut butter or cheese or egg or whatever) some fruit apple satsums banana some veg sticks carrot and cucmber a yogurt and sometimes a biscuit or hm cake....he likes the same every day but if your child likes variety u could change it round a bit
re summer activities i find it hard to keep them entertained cheap....we normally buy something like a water slide or fancy paddling pool or sandpit at the start of summer holiday and then they are there for the whole summer....bbqs are fun and last ear we purchased season tickets for alton towers that cost a lot initially we really got our moneys worth because we went load...hth
    onwards and upwards
