thriftlady wrote:Today my kids have got mini wholemeal loaves (rolls made in mini loaf tins) sliced to make little cheese sandwiches, grapes and fresh figs( half a fig each),carrot sticks and cherry toms, cashew nuts/sunflower seeds and chocolate covered rice cakes.
Yesterday they had spicy sausage and pasta salad (with peas, sweetcorn and carrot in), a flapjack, kiwi/plum and some twiglets.
On Wednesday they had tortillas spread with cream cheese and ham then cut into sections to look like sushi, fruit salad, pretzels, cherry toms and veg sticks and one chocolate coconut cluster.
I've just bought these lunch boxes and am totally inspired to make fantastic lunches.

Snap! I think I might have seen a link you posted for the laptop lunches. They are expensive, but I think they work well.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
My DS aged 2 goes to nursery and they dont provide food, in his packed lunch he has eitther tomato pasta - which they heat up or tuna pasta cold, he doesnt really eat sanwiches but sometimes has pate or cheese.
an apple or bannana and a fromage frais youghurt.
They supply water at the nurserey and snacks of rice cakes and fruit - which apparently he always wants seconds!
When i pick him up i always have a 'treat' for him - which consists of an apple or bannana!:j Baby boy Number 2, arrived 12th April 2009!:j0 -

I kind of want to keep a record of what I'm putting in my kids lunch boxes so can I add to this thread?
Tomorrow they are having
leftover veg chilli, with chick peas, kidney beans, baked beans, sweetcorn, peppers, tomatoes etc
one banana left whole, wrapped in a tortilla and cut into slices, might add some chocolate spread as a treat.
cubes of cheese
a few cherry tomatoes and cucumber sticks.
always water to drink at lunchtime.
I always give them good meals in the evening but got stuck in a rut when it came to their packed lunches. I'm now a huge fan of the laptop lunch box, the lack of waste is incredible as I hardly ever use bags or foil to wrap things in. My son is so keen on his packed lunch now its a joy to see!“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
Oh, your lunchbox ideas sound a lot like the sort of things I do Tiff
chilli sounds lovely. Today I put grapes in the big lidded container with some choc spread in the little lidded container for dipping. My kids loved it but all their friends thought it was 'gross'
They also had a mini loaf cut into mini sandwiches with ham/egg filling, tomatoes, twiglets and a Babybel.0 -
Mmm, thats a good idea grapes and choc spread. I think its having those 4 or 5 pots to fill and knowing I should include one of each of the food groups that really helps. I've put a load of tortillas and wholemeal pitta bread in the freezer, strange how my 8 year old wont eat wholemeal bread but has no idea the pitta is w/meal too. lol He also wont eat a banana on its own but will if its done in the tortilla etc.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

I just wanted to say that this thread has given me just so many ideas for packed lunches.
In addition to that, someone very early in the thread talked about Thermos blue/pink/purple cups with a built in straw from Wilkinsons (99p) that don't leak. Absolutely true! I spend AGES looking for leakproof cups and never found any but these are FAB and v. cheap. Thanks.
Someone else mentioned a £3.99 stanley wide necked flask from Aldi (which BTW The Range sell for about £4.50). You heat the food up in the flask in the microwave and then put the lid on. It keeps the food warm for up to 6 hours. FANTASTIC! I bought one of these and DS should be muching lasagne and sweetcorn as we speak. It means i can give him warmer meals and a change from sarnies everyday. BRILLIANT. Thanks again.

I remeber when I was at school my mum used to make me really great pack lunches I still remember them now 20 years later (wow I feel old saying it like that)
I used to have 2 plastic screw lided pots, one would have sugar free jelly in and the other a different type of fruit, i.e. satsuma segments, grapes peaches etc. I would also have either cheese and crackers or a sandwich. I never got sent with a drink as I always prefered water.0 -
Ok, todays lunchbox was a success, nothing left! Tomorrow they are having
Wholemeal pitta stuffed with houmus, lettuce and cucumber
Pieces of chopped mango
Cashew nuts
Cubes of cheese
water“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0
