HI, i live in council accomodation, and have suffered simular problems. Our heating went wrong in august, and the seperate immersion heater also didnt work. It was all finally resolved this week - so nearly 3 months after it was forst reported. I finally made a complaint to enviromental health and they interviened on my behalf, and things moved very fast. It is sort of ok for a few days to be left without heating, but not for weeks. And hot water is not ok, according to our council.

Contact your HA today, they should have a measure in place to either assist you with using a local hotel? for showering your children. They should also have a grevience form that you can fill out, and should give you a reduction on your rent for the time you dont actually have the required services your paying for.

If you need further advise, contact your council but say its a private landlord - they seem to give out a bit more imformation when they think its not one of their own.

    Good luck

A local hotel? dream on. In my interactions with HAs and LAs i doubt that this will happen. Its just tough and i expect they will use their best endeavours to sort the problem but dont expect to be put up at the local travel lodge.
  • Thanks pssst yes it is a combi boiler I dont have an immersion heater as I guess they didnt think we would need one. Boiler only 18 months old and engineer told me next door also have problems but luckily he didnt fit the new part on their boiler as he was worried that theres would do the same as mine so they still have luke warm water and heat.

I know I am overeacting and before dad illness I would have got on with it very stressed at the mo everything is leaving me in tears.

Off to take a deep breath and dry my eyes now.

Could you beg / steal warm water from next door? As they could have been in your situation....and weren't because you're in it? Does that make sense....

Why are you bathing the children? Just 'top and tail' them in a bowl at the kitchen sink. A few days won't hurt them. Or do it in the living room in front of the heater (not too close though ;) ). That way you only need to heat the living room and the childrens bedroom.

For all the supportive comments thanks for the few nasty ones I hope you never have to come on here at your lowest point ever. I lay awake every night wondering if my dad is still going to be alive the next day and I know the problems seems like a little one to you but its one more I dont need.

I rang HA and they have rang the heating company who are dealing with it are now going to get the part on a faster delivery service so hopefully I should have someone out at the weekend.

I love MSE but this has made me think twice about posting again.:(

We all love MSE and please dont stress about it. Its just the cut and thrust of debate for some and some of us are hard and embittered by life experiences. Still some of us work in,shall we say, customer facing roles where we have people screaming and demanding all day and it can get wearing. Not saying your screaming and demanding young lady so its not meant personally :)

These days we have become so used to all the modern conveniences and some of us are too young to have experienced slightly harder times so we can tend to be a wee bit scathing of others. Its called becoming an old curmugeon. So yes, keep posting and pay no heed..it isnt personal

Unfortunately, waiting for parts for a boiler is part and parcel of life. No stores could ever be large enough to have every spare part in stock.

I had a combi boiler and one winter it packed up, the man told me it'd cost over £200 to fix it and I couldn't afford it. I went 6 months with no heating and no hot water (kettles for baths) until somebody else came round about something else and he had a look and said he could fix it for £30 (new part, ordered it/fitted it)... just the first guy was obviously giving me a "single female/clueless" quote.

So, at least you don't have to put up with that!

In the meantime, I remember when I was growing up that we only had one bath night a week. Bath night was always Sunday nights. So just keeping your kids clean in the meantime needn't be a full bath.

Good luck, I hope he comes back soon and it's the right part!

Hang on,wheres my violin...ah yes,the mists are clearing. I cast my mind back to the early 70's when i was a kid. We lived in a grotty council flat. It had old metal windows. In winter the wind used to whip through them and they would frost up on the inside as well as outside. The only form of heat was a coal fire with a back to back range which also heated the hot water. Someone had the job of dipping their foot out of the bed on a winters morn, onto the ice cold lino, tip toeing into the lounge and getting the fire going. We would often go out collecting fire wood to put on the fire to keep warm and sometimes nicked coal off the railway sidings near by.....not so long ago...tha' doesnt know thas' born....all true mind you..now wheres my Hovis doorstep and pound of dripping.

Just like to say I developed asthma type problms as a side affect of other illness and the doctor advised me to live without central heating and it certainly had a good affect, while I do not offer it here as advice..(banned by the site, rightly) I did want to suggest you spoke to a nurse/doctor who might be able to reassure you (or otherwise) on that point. :) Obviously, getting a chill won't help, but keeping wrapped up and having either lots of fun, active play time or snuggly cuddles should keep them toasty, and if they are watching tv or something a warm drink and a sitting with duvet and perhaps a hot water bottle if it gets very cold will be snuggly too.
