DVD-VCR combi - weird problem

Hi,
We have a sony slv-d900, combined dvd & vcr. After i got back from a 4 day family visit at xmas it's developed a weird fault. On several DVDs it will play the film/series just fine but won't display the menu properly. The cursor equivalent shows and we can move it if we remember the layout but the actual menu screen doesn't show.

Since it was off for 4 days (and is outside warranty by about 3 years) I'm thinking of taking off the cover and giving the inside a clean for settled dust - I had to do this to my pc when i got back as everything had settled and the 7 case fans were making an awful noise.

Given I'm a pc geek not a dvd geek I'd appreciate people's opinions about whether or not my idea makes sense. Obviously if it doesn't work i'll then wander off to my local repair place that i trust not to overcharge me.
