Last minute bargain help needed

Looking to get away for a couple of days, city break, britain or europe really.
often heard of crazy last minute bargains had by many people who take the plunge as it were.
i've never found such bargains.
where are you lot finding them?
where should i look? online? which sites?
back of newspapers?
walk into travel agents and ask what they have free in two days time for pennies?
budget is tight, looking at 1st few days in december, just need to get away from a few things to clear my head.
HELP!!!!!!!!
