Am I giving correct response?

As a technophobe I'm always wary of giving the wrong response to those questions in little boxes that come on the screen.

There's one that has "file dowload' at the top and then it asks "do you want to open or save this file" . I click on the 'open' because it sounds less invasive than 'save' which sounds like it would clutter up the computer and I usually only want to have a look anyway but I'm not sure if what I think it means is correct.

Another one is when it says "this contains secure and nonsecure items - do you want to show the nonsecure items?". I say 'no', but sometimes have had to do it again and tried 'yes' and what comes up looks exactly the same. How can that be?

Never, ever click on "open" on something that wants to put itself onto your computer. If you aren't sure exactly what it is, then you should select neither option and close the webpage.

I have my hard drive partioned into two- one is drive C: and the other is D: On drive D: I have a folder called "downloads" and I put anything I download into that folder. If I do download anything from online, I always run a virus scan on that folder before I even consider opening it.

Sorry, can't help with the secure/unsecure items thing as I only ever get that warning when I use IE and I try to avoid that as much as possible.

  • These are usually to do with my work so should be OK.
Is running a virus scan something I would be able to do? (I sometimes get a quick message come up that says it's checking for viruses, but I don't know if it's to do with downloads.)

If your virus scanner is up to date and working then it should work fine in the background. However, if you are downloading stuff that has to do with your work you should really ask your work IT person how to deal with it.
