                                  in Credit cards

                    Hi,
Hope someone can help me. My interest free period recently expired with Virgin so I paid off the balance on the card and cancelled my direct debit mandate with them so that I would not put the card in credit as I was planning on cancelling the card.
However I recieved a letter today saying that as they were unable to collect my direct debit I have been charged £12. This is despite the fact I paid the balance of £3000 off prior to the direct debit being taken.
Can they charge me for this? It doesnt seem right, will a phone call sort this out. I know it maybe 'only' £12 but I am fuming over the principle of it.
Thank you
