In similar boat...and I know what works , conquered the drink , then the fags , now its the takeways.

Weightwatchers work for those it works for , but that is not everyone , especially those with off the cuff lifestyles. Its [primary concern is making money.

Walking is the easiest and best way to lose wieght combined with a sensible diet , but you can still go mental once a week , or even twice but reduce the sizes of portions.Get a step counter and hit a minimum of 12k steps a day for the first month then add 30 percent more a month.

Kill the chips , kill the pastrie , and kill tv if you watch more than 2 hrs a day.

Fruit and salad are your new best friends , fruit you can eat without worrying about weight , but not tinned.

Walk to the shops if they are local , stay away from pies , chips etc though , and NEVER shop when hungry....perhaps even getting your BIG shop(peter kayism) delivered to prevent graze purchases.Ban all sugared drinks , and dont go for diet ones , the chemicals in them make you worse so stick to bottled water and perhaps a bit of REAL fruit juice with it or instead of.

Biscuits are the enemy , chocolate is its sneaky partner.
  • I started a weight loss goal back in November, and on recommendation bought Paul McKenna's book 'I can make you slim' (as mentioned by an earlier poster). Likewise, I can highly recommend it - much of it is common sense, but if you read it on a regular basis, you do sense your mindset changing.

Basically you simply eat when you're hungry, not when you feel you should be eating (i.e at set times). You also eat slower, so your body can tell you when it's full. Coupled with exercise, it seems to work well. I don't avoid any particular foods, though I do find myself asking whether I really want it.

I've lost 20lbs since 4th Nov 05, only a few left to go before I'm at my 'ideal weight'.

I think it has been covered elsewhere on the replies. However, here are my views.

    1. To lose weight. The only way to lose weigth is to burn off more calories than you consume. It's a simple as that really - no tablets, no miracle diets. You can eat as much as you like (healthily of course) and as long as you burn off more calories you will lose weight.

    2. To burn off the calories. Then you need to exercise. There are several ideals - running, swimming and cycling are the best. However, that's not to everyone's taste so try differing disciplines. Just by going for a walk regularly can help. The best book for exercise that I can recommend to anyone is the original Aerobics book by Dr Kenneth Cooper. You may have to dig around on the internet to get a copy but believe me it's the best.

Hiya, I'm sorry you feel about joining weight watchers as you do. Its a very succesful plan And I lost over 2 1/2 st over 5yrs ago and have kept it off because the best thing about ww is when you get to your goal weight you no longer pay, and can attend your meeting for free thereby getting all the support and info you got when paying.I'd done other programmes but always put the weight back on when I'd got to my goal weight. I am now a leader and enjoy helping my members realise where they hav gone wrong in the past and help them keep the weight off. Best of luck in whatever path you take.

You may want to get yourself a 'gym buddy'. When a friend & I wanted to get serious a couple of years ago, we worked out our schedules and found there wasn't really a 'convinient' time to go to the gym or anything.

We then decided that we would turn up at the gym at 8.45 every Saturday morning:eek:, unless we were out of the country. It killed for the first 3 weeks, but when we started to make it in at about 8.50, we saw the value of not wanting to let the other person down. It also meant we drank a little (not that much but enough) less so that we could roll out of bed the next day.

After she moved away, it became much harder for both of us to keep it up.

Go on Becles! Get a buddy to go walkies with, try yoga, have an emmergency talk after you decide to have the snickers rather than cope with the h*ll of pmt or just to giggle with at aerobics classes.

Good Luck and keep us updated...

    Hi
I would also like to say for those who have been ill, have a medical condition or depression you can get a heavily reduced rate from your local gym.My local authorite gym offer a subsidised amount , or even a few months free, if you have a referral from your doctor. This also includes any weight loss programmes the gym has. Contact your local authority gym to see if they offer this. I live in strathclyde and for instance you get three months free, free induction and a reduced half price rate. If you are clinically over weight it applies as well- plus they will devise a specail routinue and diet plan for you- if you want.
