I wanna - get fit and lose weight!

New Years Resolution is to get fit and lose a bit of weight for my wedding/honeymoon in April. What's the best way to do this?
I'm not keen on joining Weight Watchers etc meetings. I know what a healthy diet is and what I should be eating, so I confident I can control my diet without paying for external help.
Is it worth joining a gym? I've never been a member of one before. A couple of miles away there is a basic one in the local leisure centre. I'd also get some free swims/saunas. There is also a Bannatynes gym which my physio recommended. That costs more, but I'd get unlimited use of the swimming pool/sauna, and access to loads of different exercise classes too.
Somewhere at home I've got some exercise videos that I bought post-pregnancy, a floor mat and some small hand weights. I could do those, but there's no motivation or support to do it at home. I've been meaning to looking them out for sometime now, but haven't
Any suggestions or experiences would be much appreciated.

Watch your diet, eat regular meals like 4 times a day and do some sort of fitness 3 times a week with a break in between to recover.
Joining a gym is a good thing as it gives you encouragmnent when you see others working as well. Swimming is an excelent form of fitness because it does not put stress on the joints, running is also a good for cardio as well as a rowing machine.
When ever you do keep it up and dont give up on the first hurdle.

Don't know if this is any good, but I tried various diets and forms of exercise before trying this one. I worked out how many calories I should be taking in, using one of the many web sites, it's normally around 2,500 to 3,000 for a male, and 2,000 to 2,500 for a female, depending on your frame, age and lifestyle etc. I was horrified when I started to check how many calories were actually in the food I was eating. My favourite pizza had 1200. Anyway I tried to cut down the recomended amount by a couple of hundred a day, and also do a bit of aerobic exercise such as fast walking, jogging, cycling or swimming for 30 mins a day. Believe it or not, the weight started to drop off almost immediately. I felt better for it, and stepped up the exercise. Im now running 6 miles or swimming a mile etc. I also tried to space the amount of calorie intake throughout the day. I start off with Ready breck, which is only 100 calories and quite filling. I'll have a couple of sandwiches and bannanas during the day which are another 500, and loads of vegetables later on. in the In the end, I started to lose too much weight, and had to up the calories a bit. Another bonus was the fact that my blood pressure, which had been steadily rising, has now dropped right down again. The only drawback I found was that it can be a bit addictive. Anyway, all I can say is that it worked for me, but might not suit everyone.0

I dont really see the point in joining the gym they are so over priced and you will have everything you need in your house for a good work by all means go swimming that is one of the best forms of exercise. Go for a 30min brisk walk everyday that is also a great form of exercise:beer: LOVE LIFE PROCEED & PROGRESS0 -
Becles,
I have tried all the home videos and exercise equipment and nothing motivates me to do the exercise at home. The only thing that works for me is the gym where I get a personal fitness plan, encouragement from others and an opportunity to relax with a swim, jacuzzi and sauna afterwards.
I think its each to their own but it may be worth seeing if you can get a trial membership first before you commit yourself to a full year's membership. If you haven't tried it yet you won't know if it works for you.
The money is worth it if it works for you.
Whatever you decide - I wish you good luck x0 -
As a Fitness Instructor I would recommend clicking on the Fitness First website and taking advantage of the Free Day Pass that they have available.
Go along and give them a loadof speal about wanting to start a new regime....
They will more than likely offeryou a weeks trial or alike!!!!0 -
I have lost weight with weightwatchers in the past (and put it on again) I recently started to go to Slimming World and even with my lifestyle of staying in hotels and dinners out with clients etc I am losing 1 to 2 lb per week. If you don't want to pay every week it's worth getiing hold of the eating plan and they have offers at this time of year.0

Hi
I know what you mean about having no motivation at home- Im the same ( especailly in this cold weaher when all you want to do is wrap up).
I have joined a few gyms but as they have never been on my doorstep I could never find the motivation to go to them- especailly in the dark nights. You just make excuses like I will go tomorrow. So if you are going to join a gym and far away I would suggest getting a friend etc to go. I agree with the exercise in the house- it seems silly sometimes bobbing up in down in front of the tv when I can watch a sitcom and eat a choccie biscuit! I recantily got my pal a small trampoline ( cost £19.99) and its really good- its really fun ( so you want to use it ) plus it REALLY WORKS YOU OUT- I got a shock, i thought it was just a marketting con- but I never lasted two minutes! The other thing I would maybe suggest is something my neighbour has done- now shes not rich but wanted to lose weight for her daughters wedding. So she hired a personal trainer who called once then twice a week- and heck she lost tons of weight and kept it off.I was most impressed- it does cost extra but does work.
My last suggesting is about the food thing- some people lose more wieght dieting some exercise works best and others need both.I lost three and a half stones this year. Not by following a diet- as im too lazy .I just changed the way I thought about food and eating. Paul mckennas how to be thin book is a really good example of this and for £5.99 i would recommended it as it has a cd too. There are reviews on amazon.I just started to view certain foods as being really bad for me- and have not ( nor no longer crave ) sweets etc any more.I really suggest something like as it can been done everyday, costs no extra ( unlike diets ) and once you get the hang of it it fits really easily into your life. Good luck - Iis not easy. Im now trying to convince my boyfriend to lose the four stone he needs to- but it all comes from within!0 -
Stop eating cakes sitting infront of the PC or TV and go to a Gym.
Well thats my plan.0 -
I walk to school twice a day in term time, but that's only 5 mins away! Any errands I can do locally on foot and I walk rather than use the car.
I do walk at least 20 mins a day, as I've got 2 collies. I've got no choice about that and have to go out, otherwise I get pestered to death! I normally wander along in my own little world, but could walk briskly instead.
Thanks for all the other suggestions. Here I go again on my own....0
