I have had this done to me the other week with a debit card, two transaction with in a few days of each other, both transaction were very small less than £5. Yes it is annoying but better to be safe than sorry. Its isnt just the value of the items but how you use the card, funny enough both transaction were with companies I have used before
  • " it looks at your pattern of spending & if it see's something its not happy with it'll flag up and block those transactions."

First and foremost another similar transaction (airline ticket) took place in July and for a far higher amount, so it was nothing new.

"A classic case of someone's pride getting hit with regards to credit card transactions & how they think their limit makes them exempt to policies & procedure"

Not really, the CC company could have picked up the phone, instead they decided to make me lose face in front of everyone. This is what I resent, not that they halted the transaction. Luckily I had another CC card on me, so now it doesn't really matter any more.
  • "I'd call back & at least apologise for losing your temper"

Sorry to disappoint you, but if CC company wait for me to do that, they'll wait for a very long time. It will never happen as I don't need their useless card to survive.

Ultimately, I'm not going to take morality lessons from the very people who having have gambled away and lost billions of their customers' money, had to rely on handouts from taxpayers to stay in business.

You sound incredibly arrogant, and I suspect you are like this in real life. No wonder your in the situation that you are in. I would hope that no one adds to this topic.

I have a platinum card with a well known bank with an over £10k spending limit, having been a customer for over 25 years. During the past month I had 2 transactions declined, one for just under £100 and the other when I was trying to buy an airline ticket costing just over £1k.

Were these transactions done with you present at the retailer, or were they cardholder-not-present (i.e. mail / telephone / internet order).

If they were the former, then it's unlikely the transactions would have been straight declined. It's far more likely that they would have been referred. This means that the retailer would have been instructed to call up the credit card company there and then and you would have been asked a couple of quick security questions and the transaction would then have gone through. If the retailer ignored the message to call up, then I'm afraid the transaction would then be declined and your card will remain blocked until the issue is resolved. From what you say (about being told the retailer failed to follow procedure) this sounds like what happened.

If on the other hand the transactions were cardholder-not-present, then obviously they can't be referred, and so if the card company has any doubts then they have no choice but to decline the transaction.

You sound like you've made your mind up, so just close down teh account and use a different card.

But just be aware that all card companies do this from time to time. It's standard procedure, nothing personal. I'd save your ire for something more important. And as for losing face, retailers see this all the time. THey know it's standard procedure too.

I've had payments stopped before now through "overly zealous" cc flagging systems but to be honest, I'm glad they do the checks. Having your card stopped is an inconvenience but compared with what could have happened through fraud with a nice big limit like you have......

If someone had blown a wad of you card limit on stuff and left you with the bill, then your reaction would be many times worse than it was now.....

  • Why did you ask if you were right or wrong when you so clearly think you were right, and argue with everyone who feels you were wrong?

Judging by your reply I don't think you realise that the guys on the phone have no direct involvement to the financial difficulties at the moment. The previous poster who mentioned your arrogance was spot on. Another case of common sense dellusion by someone who relates their status in society by their credit limit. Stop wasting everyones time here.

Do you remember all the items you bought using your CC card 6 months ago?

I keep all my statements for one year, so this information would not have been difficult to furnish.
