My Brother all in one is showing the message "unable to clean" in the LCD display,and "refer to the user guide"
I've done this and it says to check for any obstacles in the printer and to disconnect the reconnect to mains after a few minutes.
I've tried all this and nothing works.
Although printer is out of warranty it hasn't been used much so I'm reluctant to fork out for a new one if I don't have to.

I have just had the same problem with my Brother DCP 340CW - have a look at this link - resetting the purge counter worked for me and I haven't noticed any problem with ink overflow yet:
