Why are Tesco prices going up?

I always buy Tesco value wholemeal bread - good value at 30p a loaf. Today, I see it's gone up to 40p - that a 25% increase! Then I go to buy my favourite chocolate Break biscuits, and they've also gone up from 74p to 88p - an increase of 19%.

What's going on here. With petrol/diesel prices going lower, I thought prices of supermarket goods were supposed to be coming down. How can Tesco justify these huge increases?

    I've been Money Tipped!
also tesco have stopped many of the value ranges I used to buy eg chocolate bars own range wer 35p now the cheapest is 79p

no more value range wash up liquid for 13p (great for washing clothes by hand) now cheapest is half the size and 49p

I've change to safeway who still have the value range

also buy veg on the market a huge bag of veg for a quid, 50p if you go later on in the day. Tesco will lose trade I think!
  • Hi, yes i've noticed lots of their products have had price increases, lots of items go up 10 or 20p in a week!

Mind you, i've found their own brand concentrated non bio washing liquid now for £1.49 so while thats still a good price I keep a few in as no doubt that will soon go up too.

Used to buy their value chocolate bar at 23p then one week it was 34p!!! Lots of small price increases soon add up when you get the bill at the checkout.
  • Not just Tesco it's happening at.
Was in Lidl the other day and noticed a lot of stuff had suddenly gone up in price.
Thought food prices were supposed to be coming down for goodness sake!
If it's not a bargain, it's not worth buying :D

Funny how Tesco say they are helping people through the hard times of the credit crunch and recession etc, and yet they are increasing prices all the time and removing products from their Tesco Value range.

They have pulled numerous things from the range in recent months, I can add that they have also pulled Scones from the range, whereas the same ones are still available in Asda Smartprice and even Somerfield have started stocking a Simply version of them.

I don't like shopping at Tesco vs Somerfield at the best of times, however because I shop late at night, I end up in Tesco as the local Somerfield closes at 8pm. However, I am not starting to pick things up at the missus's local Asda instead of paying Tesco's rip off prices for the things they have removed from the value range.

I don't care what they do, it is up to them, and obviously they are in business to line the pockets of their shareholders, however I think it is wrong for them to claim to be helping people through the hard times more than anyone else, when in reality they are making the cost of shopping more expensive for a lot of savvy shoppers who don't just buy certain things because it has a brand on it, and recognise value for money over high prices for brands.

Each to his own, but I find our local Somerfield really expensive. I only go in there to pick up free magazine for recipes and a quick look for any reductions but even they have tailed off lately. I think they only stay open because of huge local student population and Waitrose being only other supermarket in walking distance. Personally I find Asda and a bit of Aldi the best value but I know I'm really lucky as we have almost all major chains nearby.
  • When is the Co-op take over of Somerfield supposed to take place? I know Co-op is extortinate and have noticed over the last few months that Somerfield have been becoming less favourable with their offers.....has the Co-op already taken them over?

I only enjoy shopping at Somerfield because it more relaxing, less people taking their kids along for a day out, not overcrowded etc... Plus the staff are friendlier as they are not just treated like overworked slaves.

However, I shop at Tesco mainly for pricing; but for a few things Somerfield are better. Their Simply fries for instance are amazing, 2.27Kg for 61p and they are 20x better than Tesco Value chips. In fact, even the missus, who is picky about her chips, thinks they are excellent, every bit as good if not better, as Mcain etc...
