PO Travel Money Card -online buying disaster

I have a post office travel money card in sterling - it works very well. Going to the US in a few weeks so decided to get a US$ one and as our nearest PO is like bedlam most times, decided to buy online. Oh dear!

It didn't work well. I put in my initial rather than my first name on the application. This is not allowed apparently, although they don't send the page back for correction. Money taken from CC and (a monstrous) £12.50 charge for an ATM transaction.

Two days later I received a phone call to say they can't issue the card because I didn't put in my full name. This is doubly ridiculous because they can see I have a sterling card. Also they can't refund onto the credit card so will send a cheque and hope to do this within 7 working days.

I pointed out that the system should validate information properly. If it can't and an application has to be checked manually before it can be accepted, then the money should not be taken until then. Also, if you take money from a credit card and cannot provide the service then it is usual to refund to the credit card.

My credit card provider said they could put the item in dispute and then try and find out who to claim the money back from - this could take several months.

So it looks like my only option is to wait for the cheque, pay the credit card bill, take the £12.50 hit and the currency fluctuation since that date and save my sanity. Oh yes, and I don't have a prepaid travel card...

Do be aware of this - probably safer to brave the post office counter....
