Childrens inheritance

Options
My 3 children ( 11,17,and 17 ) have all just inherited £60000 each. How do I invest it. The twins are off to university next year so I am thinking of having £300 each readily accessible to pay for them through university and then invest 30 each. the 11 year old I need a longer term view but am risk averse.

Make appointments to see 2 IFAs.

Don't sign up for anything, listen to their advice and think.

Then make a decision - which IFA are you most comfortable with (from an investment point of view).

For the 11 year old I'd consider an investment trust from a company such as Alliance Trust, but getting proper professional advice for such significant sums is vital!

This is a cracking opportunity to set your kids up for life!
  • Couldn't agree more with opinions4u. Maybe look at 3 IFA's. Also I'd pay fees rather than commission. The more detail you can provide about your children's needs the better. University, pension, buying a house etc. These will break down into short, medium and long term and will therefore all require different treatment.

I think you may have made a misprint on the £300 to get your twins through University. You may have meant 30k each. You could consider checking out the student loan rate and maximise this PROVIDED you can save the money at a better rate until your twins leave university.

NS & I Indexed Linked Certs are RPI proof but you might like to consider a modest equity investment as well even though you are risk averse.

Your IFA should inform you but take a second opinion if you aren't sure about what you are told. A few hundred pounds is a lot of money but small beer comapred with 180k and what it might do over many year.
