Help me .... tell me how you negotiate the price you pay

Options
I wish to purchase a popular limited edition print. Only 295 were produced and all have been sold through the publishers, the only ones that are available to buy now are on the secondary market (through galleries).

The prints were sold at around £295 about 18 months ago ... I've been offered one for £1,195 and unsure how to negotiate downwards. I have emailed the gallery who said they could move slightly on the price and what were my thoughts! What are my thoughts!

No idea how to play this and any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Something like this is a li'l different toan ordinary purchase, of everyday items, like a car, tv, furniture etc.

It sounds like a hefty mark up, profit oppertunity for someone & as you know how much it initially cost - also had a profit element, in the £295, too - I'd offer them their money back & a few £$£$ for their trouble!!

But in reality, it's obviously something that you'd appreciate much more than a non-collector, so it's simply a value is whatever it's worth to YOU!!

    Maybe get a 10-15% discount??

  • offer way below what your willing to pay, then when they inevitably push teh price you you are still paying what you believe is a fair price.

An ex-boss of mine once said the tactic in this situation should be to 'make them laugh' with your first offer - i.e. if they laugh at your offer then there's no way they'd accept anything lower than that price. Then increase your offer as far as you can afford until you reach a price they are happy with (assuming this is still within your budget) Good luck

on the other hand, if you offer a price thats too low, they may not take you seriously. have you tried price comparison sites, and googled the title of the print for all possible links to the pic? it may be there is an article on what sort of price the print has fetched in the past, as a resale from original price. you could then perhaps go say 10-15% less than the last known sale price (unless of course if that price is higher than you're offered!)

whatever, good luck, but at that price, make sure you really, really like it!
