To cut a very long and borning story short, my car broke down and was recovered to the garage I purchased it from 4 months previous, it can't be fixed and I have managed to sell it on. The new buyer arrived at the garage today and was charged £60 from the service department to settle the outstanding bill for the recovery before they released the vehicle!!!!!!!
I've subsequently had him on the phone going barmy about the whole thing, further more he's been issued a receipt for his payment with my details on!
Not only am I mad at them for giving a stranger my personal details, address and car (its still in my name), but I have had the issue of paying this charge in dispute with them as I only had the vehicle four months and felt that it should at least be waivered as a gesture of goodwill and was promised a telephone call from someone to finalise the issue today!
Does anyone else think I'm being unresonable in expecting them to at least waiver this fee.

I'd get in touch with citizens advice. They may well be governed by the data protection act, although the purchaser would have got all of your details from the V5 document (with the exception of the phone number)
don't call them. why not arrange a test drive and take it round in first gear?
or just take a test drive and waste their time if you have a spare hour. less risky of annoying them.
it depends on the problem, but they sound like a waste of time. I'd ultimately draw a line under it and move on. the buyer has had to spend another £60, but that was their choice.Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. No wonder the bloke went barmy. You took his money off him and then he found out he had to fork out more. I think it's pretty dispicable of you not to have paid the buyer the £60 or refunded him the money.
I don't know why you're mad about them giving a stranger your name and address when it's plastered over the front page of the V5 and is also in the phone book for all to see and you give strangers your name and address all the time.0 -

i think it was a 4x4, someone with the time and money could fix it, this woman did not have the money0 -
Ok, either I've not explained myself properly or your missing the point. I've paid the buyer the £60 back so he's not out of pocket, the garage were really rude to him about paying it, so he got on the phone and took it out on me (its understandable I'd have probably done the same), at no time did they make me aware that they would not release the vehicle without this being paid, I was actually told it was okay for the new buyer to collect it!
My point is that surely they should have contacted me on this matter, after all its me they have been dealing with or at least have invoiced the buyer in his name.
I work in a business where we have to be aware of the Data Protection Act, regardless of whether my details are the V5, its against the law to disclose personal information to a third party without there consent.
Maybe your right and I should just draw a line under the matter, I just feel well and truly cheated by the company and this is just another thing to add to the list!0 -

Garage wrong thry should have made you aware of any outstanding charges.
But you are taking the data protection thing a bit far. You had a business transaction with the buyer and he of course wanted to recoup his £60. I don't understand why you are making such an issue out of this. All this PC nonsense yet again.0 -
maybe you should have went with the buyer to get the car from the garage?...work permit granted!0

I think some people have responded to you very harshly. Perhaps they have their own axe to grind, or just have no empathy or something. These situations are very stressful and some people feel they have nowhere to turn.
The garage is at fault. They should have 1) informed you that the fee was payable to release the car and 2) when it came to releasing it and they had to charge the buyer, they should have tried to contact you first,, rather than leaving the two of you to sort it out between you. They have not made any effort to smooth things over, which considering they sold you a pile of crap, they ought to have been more considerate about. It's amazing what some people call service, and such a shame that people get treated in this way.0
