What to do re selling old car?
My old W reg Daewoo Matiz has been on its last legs for a while, and recently has started getting more difficult to start first time, especially on cold mornings. I finally decided that it was getting to the point that the repairs would soon start costing more than the car's value, so decided to invest in a new car. Had a look around a few garages, but then saw an 03 VW Golf for a silly price privately (via AutoTrader). This was too good a deal to turn down, so I bought it.
I've had a few things done on the Matiz - new front brake pads £130 and new rotor arm £75 (which was supposed to help it start!) and is now with a friend who works in a bodyshop who is sorting out a scratch at cost for me. However he's just said that he hasn't been able to get the car started for a few days!
I think once the work is done it should be fine for a while, I just don't have the money to do the work!
I'm in a quadary now - do I pay even more to get it fixed to sell it (don't want to run the risk of someone coming for a test drive and it not starting!), or sell it as is for repairs, or just sell it for scrap?! The tax runs out next month so I don't really want to tax it again - neither do I want to do the SORN as if someone does test it I don't want to be done for driving without tax!
What about eBay for selling cars?
By this point I'm beginning to think I'm not bothered about making a profit, I just want to get back all the money I've spent on it in the past few weeks!

Why are you bothering with a scratch on an 8yr old car which won't start?? You've already spent £200 on a car which because of age/lack of status (no offence) isn't going to be worth much in a depressed second hand car market. If it has short MOT then it will be even less desirable. You could only expect perhaps about £750 max, prob have to take much less, so you'll only have £550 max in pocket, less amount you're spending on "scratch". A non-starter isn't going to attract much interest - either spend a small amount getting this problem sorted or sell it for spares. Scrap value is now minimal. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Some cars really have no used value. The used market is stuffed beyond full. I recently changed vehicles. Old car would have needed taxing & mot and thats what I sold it for. Try freecycle.
