Process of selling car for scrap?

I got my tax disc renewal form from the DVLA, but am thinking of selling my car for scrap. I am wondering if I sell the car around the end of the month, but the DVLA have not received the log book to say the car is sold at that time, will they still go through the process of sending an automatic fine for non-renewal of tax? The car is a 1992 VW, and I am hoping to get a little bit for scrapping it although it probably won't be worth too much.

I would SORN it as the tax runs out (that is if you have space to get it off the road).

Else take get it scrapped and make sure you get all the paper work dated for before the tax runs out then send to the DVLA recorded delivery (there seems to be a bit of a trend (on here atleast) of the DVLA saying they have not recived stuff.

Scrapping wise I would ring round the yards and ask how much they will pay (the price of scrap has dropped alot in the last 6 mths) then put it on eBay with the scrap price as the starting price, be totaly honest in the listing and I bet you will get more for it than the scrap value.
  • sorn it for the day the tax runs out, then ring up scrap yard and do the paperwork
  • Officially you have 14 days after the tax expires to notify SORN/to tax/to notify disposal to DVLA. So that takes you up to Dec 14th, should be plenty of time for you to notify. Also the fines don't actually go out until approx 2months after the tax/SORN expiry date. Just make sure you send Section 9 from registration certificate/logbook/V5C in, and you will get letter back confirming disposal within 4 weeks.

Provided you take it to scrapyard by 30 Nov and ensure both parties sign and date relevant parts of V5, then vehicle isn't yours. Send off your part of V5 to DVLA asap, but they do not accept recorded so just get proof of posting.

    Yes they do!

Proof of postage will not help if your appeal if you did receive a fine, proof of delivery (i.e. recorded mail) will.

When I tried to send V5 by recorded at my main PO was told by counter staff DVLA don't accept recorded.

  • I work at DVLA and trust me we receive hundreds of recorded delivery letters per day. PO must have been mistaken.
