Tescos-Every Little Helps...NOT!

Just got back from doing the fortnightly shop at Tescos.
Usually we buy mostly Tescos own brand/Value but today I noticed that a lot of brand name alternatives were a great deal cheaper than Tescos! We chose the brand names over Tescos products, but still managed to spend over £40 on a shop that usually costs £30 approx.:(
Was wondering if Tescos are struggling with the credit crunch:rolleyes: & whether they think people will automatically reach for their own brand as it's usualy cheaper & not check the price of their purchases? Or maybe it's to try to combat Asda with their 'our brand name products are cheaper than Tescos...'

Unfortunately all the major supermarkets (well, Asda and Morrisons anyway, but I presume there is an across-the-board pattern) seem to be increasing the prices of their value ranges, in many cases they have more than doubled.
They appear to have targeted popular items such as tinned tomatoes and baked beans, whether these rises are justified or not I couldn't say - perhaps these items were priced too low before? Perhaps costs have just risen generally, I'm not going to pretend I know the answers to the complex world of supermarket economics. But I wouldn't rule out sheer greed!
But if you can get these things more cheaply elsewhere, do. I haven't been to Netto's or Aldi's very recently (they're not near enough to nip out to) but it's worth checking if some of their tinned food and other staples are still dirt-cheap. Otherwise, we will just have to swallow the price-rises - as far as I know they're not illegal.
But also, consider buying your groceries elsewhere where practical and advantageous. If you have a fruit and veg market in your town/village/suburb, consider that for starters - it's bound to be cheaper than the supermarket.
Spreading your shopping around can offer huge savings, whether you do it in the supermarket or not. I know it can be time-consuming, but it's less so when you have it down to a fine art!0
