I've just been in my local store (Biggleswade) clutching my voucher but staff were going round telling shoppers that everything was 20% off today anyway (10% for entertainments etc)

Not sure if that's nationwide though

It's not the official line of the company from what I can see as it is still being branded as a "Friends and Family" event and not just a free for all like at M&S today.

I think it is probably to do with how they have to apply the discount on the tills - they have to press a button to activate the event before scanning the first item in the transaction. If the customer presents the voucher at the end of the transaction, it's too late to apply it - so they'd have to start again.

Giving it to everyone just makes the colleagues' jobs easier I suppose - less chance of them having to re-scan whole transactions for the sake of applying discount.
  • I find it offensive that people would hijack an invitational event like this....."Friends & Family" it states! (Who do you know who works for Woolies?)
You will ruin it for those entitled by swamping Woolies with these vouchers - I know it is money saving , but this is just wrong!!!
My understanding is that because of the quantities being offered up, most managers are going down the % off for all as they don't know who has given genuine vouchers to who.
If the rumours are true, you may now find that these vouchers may now be withdrawn from staff use in future as a result.
    Thanks
    Attend SW Tuesdays =
Walk to station every day = :j
3 workouts per week = None :embarasse
Plan my meals weekly = Nope:eek:
  • Employees of Woolworths are provided with a discount card after 6 months service anyway, so its unlikely to be a problem for genuine Friends & Family in the future, as the employee could get the items on their behalf if there are no vouchers to be issued.

Can I draw your attention to the Threshers "incident" last year?
That was also a Friends & Family event if I remember right, and it got used by non-friends & family many times. Threshers enjoyed a time of massive sales as a result. I'm sure at the end of the day, they weren't complaining! And it has happened to the point that they have done the same deal again this year, but it's not branded "Friends & Family" this time around, but you do need a voucher to get the discount.

Don't get me wrong, I can see your point. But I think it would be safe to point out that there are many other scenarios of events aimed at a certain group of people on this forum - and people who don't fit into that group take advantage.

At the end of the day, I see it as the job of the company offering the deal to implement a scheme to validate that the customer is indeed eligible for the offer. If they choose not to (i.e. I read something on HUKD that the member of staff's details don't need to be written on the voucher like it had to last year), then its potentially fair game.

Although... if you don't wish to take part in the event, you don't have to.

Went to my local Woolies today armed with a couple of vouchers and worried about them questioning me as to their origin.

Needn't have worried. Was met at the door by a member of staff handing them out. Then, first thing lad at till did was to extend a voucher and explain that he was going to take off the discount. Clearly Woolies are desperate for trade.

Great if you've got kids as most kid's clothing seem to be 50% off + 3 for 2 and now the extra 20% off too.
  • Used the voucher with no problems on 2 separate transactions. Very happy to get the 10% off guitar hero !! :j

Definitely not 20% for all, at least not in the kingston branch.

Just been armed with my voucher.

Was approached in the aisle by SA who offered me a voucher.

Manager was talking to a couple of SA's briefing them saying "I have to report my sales at 5pm tonight, it's all about money in the tills today, whatever it takes, now go and give these leaflets out to everyone and I'll stand outside and do the passers-by."

The leaflets he was giving were 3 for 2 on chocolate!!!
Yet when I paid there was a small pile of the 20% off by the counter! Unbelievable!

Thanks for the heads up OP

If they are trying to sell themselves it sounds like they're trying to up the numbers in preparation for a bid from someone. makes sense. Will have fun tomorrow myself....when I've printed a few vouchers that is.
