Finding flights through aircraft type

We're planning a holiday next December......Manchester-Boston-New York-Washington-Manchester.

We only plan to do Man-Bos and Wash-Man in flights. The others will be public transport.

I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to planes, they amaze me! I've never been on a 747 and I'm obsessed with them :)

Is there any websites where you can find flights by the type of planes or find which planes airlines use for different destinations?

Also, does anyone know how to find out the routes, airlines and prices of the Airbus A380?

There are no jumbos flying direct from man to bos/was. There is singapore airlines to singapore, virgin to orlando and pia to pakistan with jumbos

  • Well, as far as I know, you'll have to have some flexibility as very few airlines fly 747's across the Atlantic these days, and certainly none from Manchester.

However British Airways (for this December) fly 2 / 3 daily flights Heathrow - Boston on 747's, and 1 / 3 of Heathrow - Washington (and v.v) flights on Jumbo's so if you pick right, you'll get on them. However, they are slowly replacing the 747's so you might find yourself on 777's by then, but these are currently your best bets.

You won't get an A380 flying these routes by next December, I think you will only find them flying South-East and East for a few more years!

If and when it comes to booking ask your TA or on here and people will tell you which flights if you can't see the yourself.
  • Thanks for that - yes certainly happy to be flexible. I'll have a look into those flights when they become available.

With the A380 - I noticed on a football match board advertisement that Emirates now fly to New York with the A380 - I'm having trouble with their website - does anyone know anything about that?
  • Yes they do, once a day.

Be a hell of a journey though, London - Dubai - New York and vice versa.

In January 09, three airlines will have A380 in service, Singapore, Emirates and Qantas and all three will visit LHR.
The OP could do MAN-SIN-SYD on SQ Singapore airlines with B747 and A380 aircraft or MAN-SIN-LHR being slightly cheaper.

With Emirates they could do MAN-DXB-LHR which could include one leg on an A380.

Flightstats has lots of info, you can enter a flight number and find out what type of plane it will be, or just see what is happening at an airport. There is also info about delays, runway changes etc. there. Even more detail if you register (free)

Sadly the text updates do not work with UK networks but I usually look there or use the mobile version if I am meeting someone.

No they can't. MAN-SIN is operated by a 777-200 year round. One of the 3 daily Heathrow flights is a 747, the other two are A380.

Also PIA have operated 747s at Manchester for some time. They use A310s and 777-200s now, including on the Manchester - New York route that they run a couple of times a week.

Virgin as you suggest is the most likely ex-Manchester bet for a jumbo anywhere near the States.

Ooops, aircraft types do change, worth double checking with airlines before booking.

I much prefer the Airbus A340 over the 747s.

Virgin's at least are much quieter and smoother.
  • Easily done. Manchester used to have a number of 747s going from there. I remember Singapore and Malaysian both operating jumbos from there until a few years ago.

Sadly the jumbos slurp fuel and Manchester doesn't quite justify the big birds any more. Great to fly on though!
