Help!!! Any Corgi engineers or plumbers in the house today?

Hi

A friend of mine has a baxi solo WM50/4PF boiler which has decided to pack up this morning. She has been advised that the system needs topping up as she bleed the radiators a while ago and needs to put more water in the system. Could anyone advise how to do it or point me to a website with instructions or a manual for this boiler? Thank you in advance and a Happy New Year!

When we fitted a combi boiler in my friend's house a few years ago I remember having a valve to allow mains water into the pressurised heating loop, so it could be filled.

    Hi Tom

Thanks for you reply, I have a combi-boiler thats also really easy to top up but my friends boiler isn`t a combi, it has a storage and expansion tank. There must be an easy way to do it but its find out how. If she has to call someone out, it will cost a bomb!

Ah right, there should be a float valve in the header tank. Sometimes this has a stop valve in line with it, so go and check whether that's open.

I did a lot of work on an open system and this automatically filled via the float valve.

    Hi

Me again! Right, just spoke to her and she said that before she bought her flat (council) the overflow from the boiler was constantly running and the council sent out a plumber who done something to the expansion tank. She has just checked the expansion tank and its bone dry! She also mentioned when she bled the radiators they were also bone dry. Somewhere along the line the twit has turned off the supply or messed up the valve by the looks of it. any ideas?

    Thanks

  • If you log on to Baxis website, they can send you an instruction booklet, or you can download and print your own.

I always have trouble adding links, so will try this one for you;- (fingers crossed)

It sounds like the council chap just turned off the water supply to the header tank.
So turn it back on until the tank fills up and then turn the supply off again. Short term fix. There's usually a tap near to the tank for this purpose.

The functioning of it is really simple. The tank needs water in it. You can fill it using a hose pipe for all it matters.
