Hello,
I really need some help. i stupidly took down a light fitting without looking how it should be replace.
I have 2 light fittings in my lounge and 1 switch. 1 light fitting is up fine but the other I tried to replace with a newer fitting the same and thats where i came a cropper.
I can get both lights to come on separately or together but can use the switch to work either.
I have 3 wires coming out of the ceiling. Each has a green/yellow wire and a black wire. I have 5 red wires.
The light fitting has a block with 2 rows of 4 holes to put the wires in.
Could you please advise me how to connect the wire.

I have read all the posts on this forum for this problem but it doesn't help my problem.
We removed an old fluorescent light fixture and planed to replace it with a new fixture. When we removed the old fixture there are 2 wires from the ceiling (each has 3 wires. 1 black, 1 white and a bare copper wire). The light we are replacing is operated from a wall switch. The new light has 1 black, 1 white and a bare copper. We connected the 3 black wires (2 from the ceiling and 1 from the new fixture) together, the 3 white wires together and connected the bare copper wires to the ground screw. When we turned the breaker on, the light came on but the switch was turned off. When we turned the switch on it threw the breaker off. We have tried every combination possible and can not get this to work? Any ideas?0 -
This thread started in 2005, you're better off making a new one.
However, it sounds like one cable comes from the ring main and will have a permanently live supply, and the other goes to the switch, giving you the switched live back (often the black, although it may be marked with a bit of red tape). Normally, you would have 3 cables in a ring, as shown here. You need to identify where your cables go. If you can't do that, you ned an electrician.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. I know it's old post but I think there is an easy solution.Turn power off. Disconnect all cables. Take red and black from one cable (any of them) (secure the others) and connect red to brown in light fitting, black to blue in light fitting, turn power on- if lightis on that' your supply cable if not most likely it's switch cable. If light is not on should try other cable exactly same way. Once you know which is supply connect:
red with red, black with blue in light fitting, black from switch with brown in light fitting.
Unless there is few lights on same switch and this one is in the middle.
I'm not an expert, so what do you think?0 -
Hello, i’m wondering whether someone can help me because i’m coming to the end of my tether.
Yesterday I purchased two new spotlights (consisting of 3 lights – 240w NR50 SES) for my hallway. I have three switches in my hall a double located next to front door which controls both and two separate ones for each individual light.
I changed the lights and both appeared to work fine until this morning. For some strange reason one is working whilst the other has completely stopped.
I have a 5 amp fuse for the lights and this does not appear to have blown. I have checked the wiring which seems fine and in an attempt to verify whether the unit was at fault replaced the spot light to a standard light which occasionally flashes for a second seems not to respond.
The wiring for each unit consists of 4 earth wires, 3 red and 2 black. I have repositioned the wires exactly how they were from the previous lighting rose ie. 2x black into N, 1x red into L and the remaining have been placed into a 5 amp connector strip. I have used a connector strip as the new unit only contains a L and N and states it must not be earthed as it is double insulated.
The wires in the connector strip have been placed as Earth to earth x2 and red to red.
I do have photos if this doesn’t seem to make any sense but I would appreciate some advice...please!!
