Ethernet (newbie) probs

Hi guys. Oh God where to begin. I'll never be able to activate windows at this rate
New PC all set up and running but I can't use it to connect to the net.
I'm Using an old XP PC to post here, no internet probs with an old USB ADSL modem.

So that new PC..
Vista 64bit PC.
'Wired' External Linksys USB/Ethernet ADSL modem. No routers.

The modem manual says USB isn't supported with Vista and I'm totally lost as how to use the Ethernet connection
I must be missing something in the settings? Lights on the modem say Power, DSL and Ethernet are all on. But not the final internet light.

Here's what I've tried so far.... Connected modem to PC with USB cable. Modem to phone line etc. Modem on. Turned on PC. New hardware found, but I get nowhere with the installation CD.
The manual gives the impression that the USB connection isn't supported with Vista and also that Drivers aren't needed with Ethernet connection(? )
So then I just plugged the Ethernet cable in. and started again.

Opened up Internet Options and put my Madasafish Username & Password in the relevant boxes - I just don't know if I need to change anything else in there. Can anyone put me on the right path? Anything to do in the Advanced/Properties buttons?

(checked my old modem, not compatable with Vista)

I'm a total newb when it comes to ethernet, never had to deal with it before. Thanks for any help & advice.

    Did you reboot the modem?
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Erm. Between switching USB cable for Ethernet cable, yes I did as I had to swap PCs to gain access to Linksys site (which was no help) The Ethernet cable is still in there for when I try again to sort it out :)

If you take the passwords out of the equation
A normal set up would be boot up the modem until it settles, then boot up the computer
    Simple as that
I know how to put passwords into routers, how you go about doing it through a solitary modem im really not sure (Though id hazard a guess it would ask)

  • Hey guys
Okay. I'm going to assume my password is wrong, it's been over three years since I've been with Madasafish, without having to muck around with passwords and settings, will email them now and ask them to verify my username/pass. Hopefully that will sort it, let you know what happens

    Cheers
