What do 5 year old girls like?

I need an idea for a present for my 5 year old niece. Her mum tells me she likes Bratz dolls but my niece doesn't actually seem to like dolls at all, she never plays with any the ones she already has - i have a feeling my sister is forcing these dolls on her. What is it that 5 year olds like? She doesn't mention liking characters or TV programmes unlike her sister who is peppa pig daft.

  • my 4 (nearly 5 year old) is into Hannah Montana, High School Musical, Lazy Town. She has just started school and as she has just started writing she is right into an old etcher sketcher thing she found - its not an etch-a-sketch but one of those things you write or draw on then can wipe it out again, like this a bit http://www.woolworths.co.uk/web/jsp/product/index.jsp?pid=50937115 - you know the kind of thing i mean.

She also gets the play doh out now and again and also Moon Sand but I hate both of them !
  • My 4(5 in March) DD loves play doh too, although was slightly disappointed to find all hers had gone bad this week... She also loves colouring, writing, drawing and anything disney princess... She does however love her dolls, barbies and little people and dolls house things the most...
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

  • My five year old also loves moon sand and disney princesses, she has never really been into dolls but I think being at school she wants to be into what the other kids like (which along with disney princesses is polly pocket and littlest petshop) NB polly pocket is no good if she has younger siblings who are likely to eat/swallow the small parts

What about getting a game like buckaroo or operation? My DD played operation at a friends house the other day and now really wants it for xmas.

    Anything High School Musical.
My friends little girl was 5 today and her 'bestest' (her words not mine!) present was her baby born BOY doll and baby born double buggy. HTH :D

I seen "My first Operation" on Amazon which is for age 4 and over. its a little pig instead of a man and is designed for wee hands !

DD is 5 and had a board game for Christmas last year from one of my friends which was (I think) called "Cinderella's glass slipper game" - or something like that. The board has a plastic slipper on a cushion in the centre and you make your way around the board and when you have to press the slipper it either makes a bell sound or a magic sound. DD absolutely loves it and it's so easy for little ones to get the hang of but not tooooo tedious for adults to play. She also adores playing Pop up Pirate which has been a big hit. This Christmas she's asked for "The Magic Tooth Fairy" game.

    Jxx
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

When I was little you couldn't get boy dolls.

My sister was a proper tomboy at that age but liked dolls too. She had one of those cloth-bodied baby dolls and she safety-pinned an extra "bit" to it to make it a boy  :rotfl:

My daughter is 5 and she doesn't like any of the typical pressies of character toys, she's very anti bratz and barbie. She had a brief phase of my little ponies, but that didn't last long, and it was ages ago.
She's a bit of a gadget girl( obviously these are bit pricey for a niece!but..) she loves her pink d.s and grown up digital camera, and enjoys listening and singing along on them both with head phones on ,off her own playlist!(ah,you should hear her-"dream catch me,when I fall.." seems to be a favourite sing -along at the mo!
She doesn't go for "kids" jewelery or pretend make-up, but she likes proper grown up glitter dust and gel stuff, and proper( but fairly cheap) real silver jewelery.Argos usualy has a little 9.25 heart locket for around a fiver-or used to.
It costs a fraction more than toy stuff and lasts for years, rather than breaking or getting thrown out.
Other ideas:really nice gloves or slippers.
funky wellies or pretty party sparkly shoes-ones Mum would proberly say "you don't need!"but find out shoe size first!
A nice little purse/bag with a collection of one of each shiny new coins inside.
Oh,my daughter also really likes( but I find a bit tacky!) is girly ornaments, like fairies and trinket boxes.
If there is room in her bedroom,a pretty flowery(but hard wearing and long living!) house plant, with some little thing ornament living /sitting in the pot.
A nice bedside lamp,or pretty girly fairy lights.
    Heat up microwavable teddy.
    A jewelery box.
    Girly coloured lego.
    Binoculors.
Bedtime story tape/c.d- but I'd check with Mum first as it might disturb any already set bedtime routine.
    Torch? head torch.
Nice beads and thread to make herself( maybe with you) a necklace.
Other crafty things could get a simple wooden treasure box,and some nice jewel stickers to self decorate it with.
A really pretty gemstone, rose quartz,or I love labradorite, catches the light so nice,or maybe her birth stone maybe a little print out from the internet to say,how it was made, how long ago, and where it was found etc.
My kids got a simple game of othello, and they have played with it loads,my 5 year old is very good at it. Also enjoy solitaire and connect four.

She generaly likes"proper stuff" now, rather than kids plasticy toy equivalent. She has ridiculous amounts of teddies etc,and I can't bear it when she gets more, because there just simply isn't room, and she feels mean getting rid of them! She never plays with them and there is a moses basket heaving full, which is just ridiculous, and most of them are gifts from well meaning realatives over the years!
Character toys/clothes and dvd's are a bit hit and miss, perfect if you get right but often just cast asside forever if not!

( I probably sound like a real pressie snob! but it is silly spending a fortune on un wanted token gestures)

I bought the magic tooth fairy game a few years ago and it was a big flop, that along with Dont Wake dad. A big (cheapie too!) hit was a game out off woolies called "Build a Beetle". It was a game for all ages, u get a wee plastic body and you roll a dice..if you get a six, you get to put the head on, if you roll a 2 you can put a leg on, roll a 3 stick an eye on etc etc...it is very basic but good fun. first to "build the beetle" is the winner. You cant really cheat and even the young ones can play easily without too much help.

My dd is 6, as same got dolls but doesnt bother with them, she likes anything disney princess, or tinkerbell, and she loves toilettires.

I've got her a couple of games for xmas, from Woolworths junior monopoly £5.00, and they have also got a disney princess 2d puzzle, which can become 3d fixed unit, that was reduced from £14.99 to £7.50

hope that helps a bit xx
