can i sign up to hotmail without windows live

Hiya I'm trying to set up a hotmail email but I seem to have to set up a windows live id whihc installs things on my computer. Can I sign up to the old hotmail without doing this? Or is it safe anyway? I've no idea about this stuff? Thanks

A Windows Live ID is necessary because Hotmail is a Windows Live service. The idea is once you have a Windows Live ID, all Live services are then easily accessible and require no other accounts to be set up.

There should be no need to install anything if you just want to use the webmail, there should be an option to opt out of local installations. I don't know where as I installed messenger at the same time as I signed up. Which URL are you using to sign up?

The Live services are safe if downloaded from genuine Microsoft web sites, but you should always scan for viruses after downloading new files to your computer.

its safe to download the messenger but if you dont want to then just pick the other option if your signing up on hotmail.com it gives 2 options one is windows live messenger and the live ID the other is just the ID (which is hotmail)
