Hi there
My other half has just got a laptop (2nd hand) and he put the reccomended free anti virus on it. He wasnt sure if it was working properly so he ran the microsoft anti virus - it looks as though he may have installed another anti virus on top of the free one. As a result it seems that the computer is now locked. I have tried to restore the computer but it is the same. It is a faded start up windows screen
Can anyone help please. Not very techie as some of you may already know...
Any advice would be be very helpful
Thanks
Sylvia

boot up and keep pressing F8 straight away
Select SAFE MODE
then uninstall whatever you need to get rid of:idea:0 -
Im unsure what you mean by 'microsoft antivirus'
But suggest one of the following ~
AVAST or AVIRA or AVG (All free)
and MALWAREBYTES

(Which is a malware SCANNER only):idea:0 -
Thank you, I have tried to restart and now it is just switching itself off straight away

You could try safe mode (F8) and do a system restore from there

Shut it down and take the battery out for a minute
then try SAFE MODE again (with battery in obviously).:idea:0 -

Hi did install the avast one but for some reason he didnt think that he installed in properly and I didnt see what else he did, he said it was a windows scan??? and it said do you want a free 9 month download - he said that he said no, but when he got up this morning he found that he couldnt start his computer, he read somewhere that if you try to install 2 anti virus it locks the system?January wins - 4 tickets for Skyrunners premier (courtesy of madmonster) 4 tickets for Charlie & Lola . I think he has something nasty on his computer (ie, it wasnt really anything to do with microsoft)
So if you can get into SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING, first thing id try is MALWAREBYTES (UPDATE and QUICK SCAN)
if it finds anything (And if your able) post a log on here AFTER youve deleted anything it finds:idea:0 -

Can you explain what you mean by 'goes to'?
