Days cut from 5 to 3, what do i do now?

Hi all,

The company I work for has cut everyones hours from 35 hours to 21 hours from December 1st through to end of Jan.

I went to CAB earlier but they had no one to see me so put me on call back.

Where do I stand? I will be working 21 hours and my wife works 16 hours for a different company, we have two children as well.
My aim is to get a part time job, 2 days a week to make my money back up, but that might not be so easy, I need to know info of who I contact etc...
Never done this before.

the main problem here, is you are only having a lower income for 2months, which overall for the tax year is only a £700 drop, and tbh this will make very little difference to tax credits

i know things will be tight for the next 2months, but its prob easier not to reassess your tax credits claim, and rather leave it until the end of the tax year, as when you renew your claim, your figures for the year will show as less, and you should then get a back payment in April. otherwise, by the time they have sorted out your drop in income, you will be contacting them again, to tell them its gone up again, and all the paperwork you get inbetween now and then, gets so confusing

Personally i would do as you intend, and try and get work elsewhere to make up the difference. have they told you what hours they are cutting, ie shutting down for whole days, or working short days. as it will be so much easier to find a job thats whole days rather than a few hours here and there. If you know what your employers plan is, it will be easier to start job hunting. tbh its a good time of year to find short-term work, as shops/supermarkets are looking for casual staff

Cheers flea, that makes sense, as long as it is 2 months and they dont try and extend it. I asked the question, what if we find another job for those 2 days and the director said that they wouldnt hold it against us. So if i look for another job for those two days and they fall on Monday and Tuesday then I will work in wed, thurs and friday.

The director would have absolutely no right to "hold it against" you if you DO find another job for those 2 days - the firm are the ones that put you in that situation. Ever so gracious of them - not! - to accept you would try and make up your money. You are helping them out of an awkward situation - by being prepared to take personal action to work round THEIR predicament that they have landed YOU in.

If I turned around and said NO i am not willing to drop down to 3 days, do they have to make me redundant? (been there 20 years)

Yesterday morning the directors turned up and gathered everyone for a meeting and said times are hard etc.... and then proceeded to say we are going from 5 to 3 days, so no warning and 24 hours ago the meeting was called.

I'd actually be interested to see the answer to this query myself. Here's hoping it is the case.

In a word - the answer sounds like "yes" - providing you meet certain criteria.
