Help - Hubby Drafted To Holland

Options
After spending the past 13 months away the RN has finally given us a draft as a family - problem is it's in Holland and we had all of 2 months notice. We have a house on shared ownership, bank won't let us rent it out as it's considered to be subletting so ha ha need to sell it but housing association can dictate who buys it for the next 6 weeks there is a buyer but no children so housing association won't consider them!!! Mobile companies won't suspend our services have to buy ourselves out of them, BT the same. I'm a civil servant who can't arrange a transfer have tried all the usual routes but they all say I need to be resident before being considered and most post are already filled by other service wives (too late there then!). So I'll have no job, we'll be paying mortgage and rent here and rent over there who says the Armed Forces get help, and before some bright spark suggests staying in the UK the draft is for 21/2 years and we've already spent the past 13 months barring 5 weeks inbetween apart. With my disabilities getting worse and a teenage son with ADHD and autism it is no longer a option. My question now I've finished ranting about how hard done by we all are is

"Is there any allowances he can claim due to us having a mortgage and rent in the UK and then rent on MQ's in Holland?"

The UPO say it's our choice to sell doh!!!!

  • Not sure there's an allowance, but has your husband told the drafter how difficult it is to move your family, given your special needs (which I mean in a nice way)? Is there any chance of a different draft?

  • Thanks, drafty actually gave us this draft considering our "special needs" at least we will see him every day and night, his last shore draft he was doing 10 day/night 12 hour shifts 2 days off then straight back into it, at least in holland he'll be working 6 day/nights of 8 hours then 4 days off we're all giddy at the fact we can be a family, guess until I can find a job we'll have to diet and use a candle to keep warm LOL

Just thought I would let you know that Heerlen is a great place to be, I have been there, with the Army. The school is good (my son has Aspergers), but there are no civil service jobs there at all - all are locally employed civilians. I know cause I was lucky enough to have a nice job there (which is civil service everywhere else) and I have had to start at the bottom of the ladder again on my return to the UK! If you have any questions about Holland message me. Hope the housing situation goes all right for you, and sorry I have no advice on that side.

How long have you been with the civil service can you not take a career break with them, I know some people have before.

There are no allowances for you paying a mortgage or rent eleswhere I am afraid but I know there is something to do with council tax. The rent for qtrs is pretty cheap depending on qtr size and condition and you should also get LOA - living overseas allowance which is rank and dependant based ie how many children you have living with you.

I know the army have AFF do the Navy have something similar where you can get advice
