student loan- wrong NI number

hello there,

when taking out my student loan (in 2001) i mistakenly gave them an incorrect NI number, only realising this recently when looking through old paperwork.

Since leaving university 4 years ago, i have mostly been earning below the 15000 threshold, apart from one year in 2007 when i earned approx 17000. In that year the SLC didnt take any money from me, due to having a different NI number. They have not contacted me, they must have a previous address, but i am guessing they will find me in the end.

I am wondering if it is better to contact them and confess the error now, or do i wait for them to find me or not?

I would be grateful for any advice

If you wait you risk being locked up :)

I would explain the situation to them, they should be understandinig as you owned up.
  • so they can lock me up for giving false information? if this is true then i think its definately better to own up now..
  • i have read elsewhere that giving false information on a loan means they can ask for the whole loan back immediately- this is what is worrying me about owning up!

They'll unlikely lock you up really, but they could take your to court for providing false information, also unlikely as its student loans.

But its better than getting a phonecall saying that you owe us a lot of money.

To be fair, someone else could be paying it for you :rotfl:

Anyway, if you only earned £17,000 for 1 year you'll owe the princely sum of £180.
