Problem with getting personal account as joint account is overdrawn

Options
A friend is facing a marriage break-up. He and his wife have a joint account only, with an overdraft of about £5,000. That bank is unwilling to let him have his own account until the overdraft is paid off. However, he needs a personal account to handle all the expenses (direct debits, etc) relating to his new home. Any ideas? Is there a bank that would be willing to open an account for someone with an overdraft on a joint account? He could arrange to pay the overdraft off over time. Thanks.

yes try to open a basic account at any bank really but ones with debit card would be better so there is Natwest, lloydstsb, halifax,Barclays, RBS, Yorkshire. But if hes credit file is fine try opening a normal current account at formentioned banks.

Thank you very much. I'll pass that info on to him.
  • The bank should be able to open a second account for him - it does not discharge him from the liability of repaying the overdraft - but perhaps he has a bad credit score?
