    We bought our first puppy from a farm...because we felt sorry for her. She had fleas, was underweight, and completely skitzy. She died age 3 of health problems. All our dogs since have been rescues - I wouldn't look at breeders because I know I'll have to bring them all home.

    Aww so sorry to hear that :(

    I missed the program, but it could have an effect It seems like the BBC documentry on KC has caused quite a stir with many organisations pulling out of crufts.
    Dogs from puppy farms probably aren't sold to the public from them.
    Out of curiosity i visited a kind of puppy shop (no intention of getting a pup btw). It looked very professional and the puppy's were in small groups in clean pens with a few toy behind glass doors. The puppys looked well looked after so i doubt people would consider that they might of originated from a puppy farm.

    The mums wern't with the pups, so you'd not really be able to make a character/health judgement on one parent which i think is normally advised when buying a pup.

    The shop didn't seem to care if the home would be suitable for the pup, i saw a sales assistant get a border collie pup out for a heavily pregnant lady with a few young children, which to me seemed a recipe for disaster. A few customers then went to the adjoining shop carrying their pup, to buy the basics for dog ownership so obviously wern't prepared.

    You can wath the programme on line here;

    The sight of of the GSD mother, retreating to a corner when the farmer approaches says it all.
    ( The item regarding the shipping swindler,before the dogs is entertaining. They should pair up the woman who attacks the interviewer and puppy farmer together!)

    When you see what a puppy farm looks like you will instantly know it's a puppy farm. They are filthy places, the animals are dirty and many have fleas and mange, .

    Nope, not all puppy farms are as you describe.

    There is a place near me that breeds gsd, labs, rotts, cockers etc...and I have been inside ( to collect ex breeding !!!!!es ) and you wouldnt know that it was a "farm" all very well run, clean kennels, pups have vaccinations, and the ones I saw certainly did not have fleas or mange. They were also all KC reg'd ( something which 1st buyers are told to look for!!!!!)
    They also charge about the same as the bybs around here, so someone who doesnt know what a "pup farm" is wouldnt know from this place that it was( please dont take that as me agreeing with pup farms, i work in rescue, I can assure you I hate the places )
    Also many "proper breeders" can cleverly disguise that they are in fact "farmers" im currently looking for a pup in my breed, and the numbers of "well known" breeders having 5,6,7 or more litters per year amazes me, yet no one says anything about these people!
  • i will be watching this- im sure it will be very sad though- my friend bought her jack russel from what i believe is a farm simply cos it was only £200. The dog is very nervy and growls and really acts quite viciously a lot. I dont know if this is because its a JR though or because of where it came from. In the ad the crate was disgusting looking, the dog had fleas AND was given to them at 6 weeks old with some adult tins of Chappie- HORRENDOUS!
