xbox 360 elite advice needed.

Hi, Xmas is coming :j and my son would like the above as his present.

Don't have a problem with that 'cos he's a great son in every way and so certainly deserves to be a bit indulged at Xmas, especially as he gets far less than most of his friends who always seem to get the most up to the minute stuff as soon as its out.

The problem is, our son has parents who are a bit old fashioned and have no interested or understanding of gaming.

Moreover as ardent moneysavers :money: we are reluctant to spend money on an xbox unless it's justified.

Our son already has a playstation 2 and he is allowed to do online gaming on the laptop, so unless we're missing something, it's difficult to see what would be gained by having an xbox. However we do appreciate that in the modern techno world, built in obsolescence seems to be the norm so perhaps upgrading to an xbox can be justified? As we do not have sufficient knowledge of gaming, we do not know if this is a valid opinion, hence this request for advice from experienced gamers and/or other parents.

Also what is xbox live? We do already have a broadband connection for our laptop, but how would the xbox connect to this? Would we need to buy extra kit for the xbox? Would we have to commit to future subscription charges? In other words are there hidden expenses associated with the xbox that we need to be aware of?

Hope someone out there can help before we shell out our hard earned cash. Any advice will be very greatfully received.

Cheers ktj.

The 360 is a MUCH 'better' games machine than the now almost defunct PS2. Think of it as jumping from a black and white tv to a colour widescreen.
Trust me, hell be VERY happy with it and its highly justfied to buy him one ;)
XBOX live is to play online. You need a subscription to use it (Im not entirely sure as I have a PS3 myself, but I think its about 30 pounds a year)
It connects via an ethernet cable from the router.
There IS a wireless adaptor, but thats more money again

    Hi aliEnRIC,

Many thanks for info. It made us realise that if we can justify the expense we would love to get him the xbox. We know it will make his xmas.

I notice that you've got a ps3 rather than an xbox. If you don't mind me asking how do you think that that compares to the xbox elite?

    Cheers ktj.

Hiya mmost of the Game/gamestation shops sell re-conditioned ones and are cheaper (I bought one for my son last year and it came with a years warranty, I bought it as a bundle and got a couple of games with it, we recently had to return it to the shop(on line someone had managed to hack into our details and microsoft blocked the xbox) and we got it replaced without a problem...just bought rock band for my son's birthday and it is amazing, drum set, guitar, and microphone, game (from hmv) the kids just love it and the big kids have had fun too!!:j

Despite what people say, theyre VERY comparable. The XBOX is an out and out 'games machine'
The PS3 on the other hand is more en 'entertainment media'. Meaning it plays games (pretty much just as well as the XBOX), but it also has an inbuilt blu ray player (Hi definition films), can connect to the internet and even upscales (Makes them look better) normal pc AVI files and suchlike (computer files that have movies or videos etc inside them)

If your happy for him just to play games, buy him the XBOX 360. Its cheaper than the PS3. I use my PS3 for all sorts, not just games.

Hiya again, the xbox 360 will play DVD's and you can download music on the hard drive, we are on xbox live too (internet access)and my son plays games with kids all round the world, too much for my head to take in but great machine
  • My eldest son has the xbox elite, and my middle son asked for one for xmas, my eldest son advised us not to get the elite as a 12 year old has no need for an elite as the only difference is the huge hard drive for downloading games etc.
I have bought the xbox with 60gb hard drive with 2 games as a package for £189.99, i then bought the wirless adaptor enabling him to game online interactively with others for £30 and a xbox live membership for the year for £30, this will be all he needs.
One thing though I know littlewoods have an offer on for new customers which gives £30 off if you spend over £60 and 3 for 2 on gifts and both the xbox live and the wireless adaptor and other xbox things including the console are included in this, so you could sign up order 3 things, get one of them free and £30 off, ive saved a fortune doing this on a number of things and opening various accounts!!
  • I wonder if it is necessary to buy the Elite version rather than the 60gb version? As far as I'm aware (I'm no expert though so feel free to add to this) the only differences are that the Elite has 120gb harddrive, it's black and it comes with a HDMI cable (only really needed if he'll be playing it on high def telly)

    sorry cross posted with minxtress!

Your musings are spot on. Standard 360 comes with composite leads for HD though.
  • The Xbox Pro also comes with an HDMI port on the back, so one less thing the Elite has over the cheaper ones. It's just black (I wish mine was black :( ) and has a bigger hard drive.

Excellent present though. his gaming experience will be hugely multiplied over the PS2 and a laptop!

personally i wouldnt of bought him the elite though,, i still believe it is overpriced

the £200 xbox 360 pro 606gig hard drive one is the best,, comes with gears of war 1, gears 2, and fall out three

thats to retail £40 games, and one xbox 360 classic at £20 you do the math and work out how much you save.
