  • I signed up to them months ago and their is never anything available in my area. I am also signed up to Retail Eyes. I have had 2 for them since October. One for a restaurant attached to a travel place, i was paid £5 for eating there but my meal was £20 which was fully reinbursed so i got paid £5 to take my family out for a 2 course meal. The other one was at my local ******. I got paid £6 for the job and a £6 spend limit which was reinbursed, so i got a free present for my niece and was paid £6 for the privilage.

The only thing is the reports are very long, normally about 70 questions.
You get paid by cheque which is issued on the 15th of the month. The cut off point for payments are the end of the month.

You do have to take care of your own tax and NI as stated below but i am self-employed anyway so it is a bit easier for me :xmassign:

Dont forget if you do this you need to tell the tax man and do a self assessment form each year.

Yes, the reports are long and take me around an hour to complete. They also like you to spell check and put loads of comments in. Worth it if you manage to get somewhere you like to eat, but its not going to make you rich.

And the taxman needs to know, so you will have to register as self-employed and fill in a tax return.

    Good luck, Mandy.

If you apply for the CounterIntelligence or Retail Eyes, you are working for them on a self employed basis. They won't pay your tax and NI for you.

You need to tell the IR and NI that you are self employed, within 3 months of starting. If you are earning less than about £4500 (not sure of exact figure), you can apply for Small Earnings Exemption from NI, otherwise you have to pay £2.10 a week.

You need to keep accurate accounts detailing your income, expenses and mileage. After April, the IR will send you a tax return to complete. You transfer all your figures to the form, along with income from other sources (PAYE work, investments etc), and either they or you can calculate how much tax you owe. You'll be sent details on how/when they will collect this.

To be honest, it's not worth the admin if you are just doing the odd £5-10 job here and there, but it is worth it if you want to do a lot of self employed work.

Warning: If you are found to be working for these companies without informing the IR/NI, you could be fined. If they wanted to be nasty, they could ask to literally go through all your finances, which would be a right hassle for you.
Here I go again on my own....

Another point to make on the posts so far, if you have signed up for these companies you have agreed to maintain client confidentiality. Mentioning the outlets you are visiting is putting you in breach of your contract with the mystery shopping companies.
Reading this back it sounds a bit stern, but just thought you need to know as I am sure these m/s companies will be made aware of the thread.

If you are starting employment with these companies , as previous posters have mentioned you will need to register as self employed, keep your expenses logged as you will need these for the tax return this April.
