Nationwide cash machines - ITALY

Hello,
I have recently just got back from Milan but could not use my Nationwide cash card in ANY of the ATMs over there, i used the main banks ATMs and any other ATM i came across, must have tried at least 20 different ATMs, everyone i put it in it said "we have been instructed by your bank to return your card, please contact your bank" i was not the only one as there were other nationwide customers having the same problems. It cant be my card as so far this year i have used it in Dublin, Benidorm, New York, Tunisia and Kos in Greece and been successful at the first ATM i have come across, i was just wondering if any one else had these problems with their nationwide card in Italy?

I used mine last week in Italy in ATMs and for purchases without any problem so not a situation over all Italy all the time.

My only problem was with train tickets on the Trenitalia web site which was not related to Nationwide as it refused several cards on one occasion only.

when we were in italy in the summer it was a bit hit and miss to find machines that UK cards worked in, though it sounds like you were having a different problem.

We found that just because a machine had worked for us one day didn't always mean it would work another time!!

I had the same experience as MenstrieBen, seems to be totally random whether cards work there (I am with Halifax and OH with Barclays and we both had problems) I got a similar message to the one in the OP
