If when you bought the top you knew nothing about the hole and Debenhams did not make you aware of it then you were entitled to a refund (you did not need to provide a receipt although it always helps if you can).

If however Debenhams had pointed out the fault to you at the till and given you a further discount for the fault then you would not be entitled to a refund because of that fault.

only spotted the hole when i'd got home, never mind, it was last year now!!!
