Problems with Nat West

My brother and his wife have an account with nat west. They also have a bank loan from them.

The account is currently overdrawn but is within the overdraft limit, but last week they missed the payment on the loan. Today, their child tax credits has been paid in but they are unable to withdraw it. When they called nat west they were told that as they missed the payment last week, nat west have frozen their account and wont allow them to use it until the loan payment is made and the overdraft is cleared.

Can they do this? I know benefit money can be gotten from the bank if you are overdrawn in relation to bank charges. Surely they cant get away with this???

It can't, and they can. If your brother knew the loan payment wasn't going to be made, he should have talked to NatWest about it...

I have banked with NatWest for years and I am afraid to say that I have never found informing them of things like being unable to pay a bill makes the blindest bit of difference. They are very unsympathetic.

I know that they are a business and not a charity, but they seem to delight in sticking on extra charges if they can.

I'd be extremely suprised if this was done on the first occasion the loan has been missed. If it's not the first time then I would understand why they have done it. In most cases they would simply take the payment as soon as funds are available anyway.

    i agree.
i went to america for 3 weeks in august/september.
a week before i went, i called them and said that i will be out of the country, please dont block my card.
they said it wont be a problem, and made a note of it.

2nd day out there...my card gets blocked!
had to buy a phone card to ring the bank, i said im on holiday, and you blocked my account.
the woman on the phone actually said 'aah yes, i see the note on your details, thats for confirming it, i have unlocked it'

THEY SAW THE NOTE AND IGNORED IT ANYWAY!!! costing me $10 for a phone card!

It was the first payment they have missed. They have already made 13 of the 24 payments on the loan so its not like it was one of the first few either.
