Actually, i'm an A380 pilot, and you're wrong.
I also invented the question mark.
That's the great thing about internet forums eh, unless you can back up statements with facts?
I don't know if I am meant to be impressed by the fact that you're an A380 pilot but the harsh reality is that I'm not particularly. If it makes you feel good to be flying the 380 I am very happy for you. I love the type that I fly but it is much smaller in size. Am I sure that everything I have posted on here in the past is 100% correct? Yes.0 -

WRONG WRONG WRONG. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Please do not post stuff like this unless you are completely sure of your facts because it is incorrect , misleading and leads to people making wrong assumptions.
Wow; what a response! Sorry if my information was not 100% factual, I never claimed it to chapter and verse on the airline industry, but was the situation as I understood. I'm always happy to admit when I'm not right; and sorry if my post does not accurately reflect the situation.
My post wasn't just based on assumptions and certainly wasn't meant to mislead anyone. I know a lot of people in the industry including pilots and posted the situation as i understood it on an internet discussion forum. Next time before i post I'll have my comments verified by 3 independent qualified experts, one of which will be you
I also work in the aviation industry. Thank god it isn't in the same bit as you :beer:0 -
There will be occasions were supply of standby crew are exhausted at a base, other problems may have occurred that day causing disruption to flights and pilot rostering.
Operations look for solution to cause least disruption overall to passengers.
there are crews in taxis being positioned all around the country at any given time. It is a regular part of the job.0 -

Slightly OT, but does that mean I need to pay you a royalty to use a question mark?
Doh, that's 10p I owe you!
Can I pay you by debit card or do you charge a £8 handling charge?
Oops, there goes another 10p0 -
I've opened a can of worms here, albeit inadvertently.
The cost of the taxi wasn't the only thing, but it would appear as though the pilot was an employee, which
Being delayed wasn't really a concern to be honest. I'm fair more interested in getting home, rather than taking wife & children t'hotel for a night. The fact that they may have made a loss (taking into account landing fees etc) just adds to my estimation of them as a decent airline.
Can't recommend easyjet enough either. friendly, and other than that, efficient.
cheers for the info all.

thing is.. i'm gonna totally disagree with you on this one.. because at no point, did bagand96 ever say, i'm posting this as 100% fact..
actually... the post started with the words - I IMAGINE... which i interpret as, this is my thoughts on/opinion on the above, just to give you some kind of idea..
which is exactly what it did do... shame you had to spoil it, by discrediting what was said, but not actually pointing us in the right direction

In a nutshell , the costs of getting the pilot from Newcastle and back taking into account any accommodation expenses that may have been incurred as well would have meant that the flight would probably have made a loss. The alternative however would have been to cancel the flight at great inconvenience to over a hundred passengers. Make what you want of the carrier's attitude to its obligations in this case.Hope this helps.
Sorry but I don't agree with that, and I work for an airline as well.
The profit in operating a round trip Luton - Budapest- Luton should be a lot more than the costs for transporting the pilot from Newcastle to Luton. No accomodation costs would have been involved in this situation. Although there would be other costs involved in the delay, for example keeping the aircraft on a stand at luton for an extra 3 hours, and maybe giving the delayed passengers meal vouchers. Even taking that all into account, I would be certain the service still made a profit.
Another point is why the airline concerned didn't have any standby flight crew on airport standby at Luton in the first place - then the long delay could have been avoided.
bagand96 - I though most of what you posted was correct.
The only thing I would say is the crews aren't actually paid more if they get called from standby, they just receive meal allowances/expenses. Also the stand-by doesnt take place on their days off, it's part of their roster. So they have some days on standby, then days off after (when they are not on call)0 -

We seem to be drifting away from the point here - if it was "WRONG WRONG WRONG" what is "RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT" ? (another 10p !)0
