Vista on windows 2000 network

hello

is anybody able to tell me what the implications of using a Vista Home laptop on a Windows 2000 work network would be (if any)? The desktops we use are all XP Business. This laptop would only be used on the network infrequently and I have seen the Tesco laptop on here (the 349 acer) but obviously that is Vista Home.
I was told I should only be using business operating systems around the network but I can't see the reasoning for this??

Thanks in advance

  • Hi, No problem connecting to any network (TCP/IP) however the IT guys would need to know about it I would imagine as it would be a security risk and you may be blocked for a straight forward network connection. Ask first.

thanks for replying. When you say a security risk do you mean the server would seeit as a risk or would it actually be a security risk?
  • Which version of Vista is the laptop using? It's worth pointing out that home editions of Vista will not be able to join a Windows Server Domain which might present you with some issues.

I haven't got the laptop yet, I just know it is a Vista Home edition rather than business.

Is correct. I run an SBS 2003 local network with my laptop and desktop on Vista Home Premium. I cannot connect to the domain which means network priveledges are a nightmare - I ended up creating a domain user with access to the shares I needed and always connect with that. I can connect to exchange without any problems. As said you will need to speak to your IT bods to find out what restrictions are in place on the network.

Vista Basic and Home Premium do not connect to network domains. Vista Business and Ultimate do. This usually isn't a problem if your network uses workgroups but if it uses domains instead, you won't be able to log on to the domain and access shared files and printers.

I.T departments see laptops used at home as a risk as they're the ones that are out of their control to a point so tend to be a source of malware getting onto a network if they get infected by the user when at home.

Thanks for all the help with this one. The system runs using a workgroup rather than domains (there are only 5 clients). This being the case I assume I can go ahead and get the Tesco Acer laptop and connect into the workgroup. That is unless I can see a similar spec with xl or vista business??
