Hi,
im after some silicone or sealant for our bathroom.
ive re-done the sealant around the bath 3 times in around 12 months and am getting fed up doing it again and again.
im going to be hounest and we have been using cheap stuff from ALDI/LIDL.
now im after somthing good
i have seen the following and want to know which one is good and reliable.
http://www.screwfix.com/prods/58308/Bathrooms/Bathroom-Sealants/Dow-Corning-785-Sanitary-Sealant-White
http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Adhesives+Sealants/Sealants/Forever+White+Sealant+310ml/d180/sd2350/p63890
http://www.screwfix.com/prods/84793/Bathrooms/Bathroom-Sealants/Unibond-Sanitary-Sealant-White-310ml
the unibond seems cheapest and they do good glue and other stuff but i still want to know if this is any good or is it worth getting one from the other two options.
i have seen a old post and people are recommending the DOW Corning 785 Sealant.
thanks in advance.

Unibond should be fine. Make sure the surfaces and completely clean and free of any grease/deposits or nothing will work well.
You can get a silicon remover to get rid of the old stuff but I've never tried it.0 -
We have just retiled our kitchen and have used a product that has a 10 year guarantee. It is called Forever White by Everbuild.
It is suitable for kitchens and bathrooms and is waterproof and contains Microban.
Only time will tell if it lives up to it's 10 year claim. It is not cheap £4.50 we paid for a tube.0 -
Just saw your link to Toolstation - that is the stuff we used!!
If the Unibond stuff is anything like their tile adhesive and grout I would stay well away. Used it and noticeably yellowed after a year.0 -
only problem is that toolstation is slightly far. and screwfix is closer0

This is definitely one of those occasions when it doesn't pay to go cheap and such a phaff when you have to redo it! I, and others on here have suffered to our cost! I would have thought £4.99 for a tube would be about right pricewise.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

I cant say I've ever had a problem with unibond products although under £3 does sound cheap.0

Unibond is pants for sealing baths. Their adhesives are great but the sealant sucks. I use Wickes own-brand non-silicon bath/shower sealant, which is very good providing it's applied properly. Make sure your surfaces are scrupulously clean (wash the edges of the bath with Fairy liquid to degrease and dry them with kitchen roll), then fill the bath two-thirds full of cold water. Double check the surfaces to be sealed are dry, then do the job. Use masking tape to give a nice neat edge, but remove it before the sealant cures. Also, don't use your finger to smooth the sealant, some brands are rather irritating. Don't try heating the room to make the sealant cure faster, it'll just shrink and gaps will appear.
Also, if the area you're sealing is prone to flexing (as some cheap plastic baths and shower trays are), consider a waterproof mastic instead.Sealed Pot Challenge number 298, up yours HSBC!0 -
Dow Corning sanitary silicone most pros don't use anything else!Mine needed a new fan so that must be whats wrong with yours:D0

Silicon is sealant.
Just make sure you get silicon sealant with anti this anti that and anti the other and a 10 year guarantee.
Ask for the best stuff you local plumbers/bathroom supplier has?Cash ISA rate 6.5% fixed for 2 years. Mortgage rate 0.75% = 5.75% profit on £75K = £4500 per year:j
Mortgages make money. Definitely don't wanabee mortgage free!0 -
I fell for the forever white sealant and although it stayed white months longer, the dreaded black mould returned..And of course, by then, did I have the receipt and can you be bothered to fight the corner for a few quid . Of course not and I think they rely on this. So whatever the micro bans its not the dreaded black mould! I think the perfect sealant is the holy grail and cheap i.e Lidl, is, in my experience, just as good0
