Perhaps, in this thread, we ought to set a challenge - how to create something luxurious out of very little?

Yeah! Sounds good to me - count me in! I'm up for a challenge :)

:) My husband cringes with embarrassment because our trolley is full of Sainsburys Basics plain orange labels. But I think I'm getting just as good stuff at a much lower price so nananana ! (he comes from Edinburgh. They're all dead snooty in Edinburgh. LOL !!

Nowt snooty about it! I gave up buying chicken breast & now use the Sainsbury's frozen chicken portions, they are only slightly dearer than a pack of fresh chicken breasts but you get far more for your money!!:T
If I make a curry, stir fry ect,I just bone out (not hard to do at all!) a couple thight's,cut them up & use them,or I dust drumsticks in seasoned, spiced flour & deep fry....home made KFC!
I do a big shop every now & again at the oriental supermarket in town, buying noodles, pappads, spices & pickles for a fraction of the cost that I'd pay in Tesco ect.
My local £1 shop sells 18 free range local eggs for £1.59,another Brucey Bargain, and I buy the dated bread ext from the CoOp.

So that's where my extra poundage has come from - its a direct result of becoming better off since paying off my debts :D

Mine extra poundage has come as the kids have grown and I have more disposable income - it's such a treat to be able to eat what I want! For the first time in my life I'm having to weight reduce.

I wondered why Mr T's was so busy today, its a flipping bank holiday! I was limited to what would fit in my new snazzy bag on wheels - 2.99 at the CS- bargain :)

I am about to have a mammoth baking session this weekend as now have a working oven and must dig out my wartime cookery book and see what is in it, havent looked at it for a while.

Yes apparently 'times of austerity' are planned - wonder what form thats going to take, at least we will all be good at it. Am trying to buy an extra tin or pack of stuff every week so I am better stocked up.

    :( No - I was't intending to sneer at all :(

Apologies for any offence - I'm sure that everyone who knows me will know that I didn't intend any...and if I've touched a raw nerve with someone else ...very sorry

I was in the queue at Mr A's yesterday behind a lady who was probably in her late 50's. It was her clothes I noticed first - an matching fitted blouse and skirt and the material was unusual and as I looked I thought she may have made it herself (it was a very good fit!). I then started looking at her shopping.... some reduced meat, fruit and some veg with no packaging and I was thinking..."she's got to be an OSer" !

I'd have complimented her on her outfit at that point - and maybe picked up a few useful tips from her whilst in conversation:D

jc2703's comment about the lady with the unusual outfit in the supermarket reminded me of an outfit my mother nade either during or shortly after the war when clothing was still on coupons. She'd acquired an old pair of cotton curtains from somewhere and being very clever with her sewing machine, she made herself a summer skirt and matching jacket from them. I recall this material being laid out, with a paper pattern on the floor, for many hours as she tried to figure out how best to arrange the pattern in different ways to skirt around the various damaged bits of material. It turned out to be a very serviceable outfit which served in her wardrobe for many years. I also remember less affectionally the scratchy woollen swiming costumes she knitted for my bother and myself out of various hand knitten woollen jumpers which had been unravelled. Somehow I have a photo of my brother and myself on a beach wearing them them immediately after the war - we look like two beggar children from the slums !
