Why are people staying up all night to take pics mardatha? Didn't you have snow a couple of weeks ago?

Agreed nesssie. I remember the days of waiting for the plough to go through so I could tailgate it for 18 miles to get to work.:rotfl:

    Afternoon all!

Snow has finally reached Somerset! I am so glad that my heating is mended! And the kids are really glad that we have so many throws and blankets to snuggle on the sofas with!

Went to see a friend this morning and stopped off in Asda on the way back, they have Countrylife unsalted butter at 47p, dried marrowfat peas at 20p (the clear and brown bags, not the boxes), and the value sardines at 18p do exist! Got some to throw in tomato sauces to tip over pasta for the kids. I actually went in to get some frozen veg, thought if the weather is going to be terrible then I don't want to have to trek out shopping, also if deliveries are delayed then I don't want to wait till my planned shop on Friday only to find empty shelves!

Now need to come up with some meal plans that involve sardines, marrowfat peas and butter lol!

Oh, pasta was £1 per kg pack for tubes and spirals as well, cheaper to buy those than the big 3kg bags!

    Edit:

Forgot to say, many thanks for the pud and lunch ideas for when my friend and her boys come to visit.

And hello to all the people who have posted for the first time, nice to see you and lovely to have new ideas and thoughts shared!

why do schools close at the first sign of snow? when I was at school( 1955 onwards) socks, gloves etc were put on radiators to dry, teachers would "double up"classes, although schools had a caretaker/ teachers who were local. when youngest(now 21) was at school one of his teachers had a fit at 21 in her class...plus she has a classroom assistant!
  • Schools round here have closed. they say that staff can't get in and they can't run the school without enough staff.

I think these days lots of people live far from their work and travel by car whereas back in 'the good old days' cars were few and far between and people could trudge in to work. I'm sure we had more stamina then!

I must admit when the roads are as they are the less cars out and about the better. Especially as so many people HAVE to run their poor little darlings to school in the car in case they get cold and wet!

I thought I was having a nice quiet day at home alone but DH didn't go to work as the roads weren't gritted/salted and two DS's off school. The only one who went to work is big DS the Policeman who left at 6am. Hope he's OK and can get back safely.

Our school is shut as the school dinner company can't supply the dinners. They have also posted on the school website that the school will be closed tomorrow as well. Personally I think they should ask the parents to provide a packed lunch instead and let school remain open.

It's only 1.5 to 2 INCHES here and the buses won't run, half the shops are shut etc..

I'm with Oyster in the old days if the buses werent running you used to put your boots on and walk!!! My mum who was overweight and had diabetes managed to walk all the way into town and back to her job at JJB sports once a few years ago when we had some snow where I used to live.. They had called off the buses to our area which was 5 minutes a branch off the main road to the next town but not the ones to the next town!!

ahh but 2 feet of snow beds down to give a good driving surface and everyone has chains so driving is relatively easy. Our few inches is not thick enough and we are driving on slippy tarmac with icy patches ie the surface varies all the time. It isn`t comparing like with like and I think we are doing pretty well

and watch the drifts. I was walking along a snowy blocked lane one year and you couldn`t see where the lane was. I stepped to the side and immediately sunk up to my waist in a drift. I remember hearing of people dying because of sinking into drifts

another time I managed to drive up a hill in a vw beetle into sedwick in the lakes and the car in front of me started slipping backwards so I had to go back and shock horror I started slipping too, scary it was with a river at the bottom and no fence

If you have never been in a skid then you won`t know what it is like, it is like moving in slow motion with no control at all. I had to get medicine for my 6 week old in 1977 as she had bronchiolitis. The lane was drifted and a lorry skidded into me. My car was a right off so I have the greatest respect for snow and ice and if in doubt then don`t go anywhere
