  • Kidcat I too suffer from a DH who hates my efforts. He's constantly complaining. I currently have 6 boxes of Daz on the kitchen floor from Sainsbury (£2.60), tons of wee parcels of leftovers spirited away to the freezer, my Favourites on the computer are jam packed with websites to read and learn about and my current "nonsense" (says DH) is Guerilla Gardening. I have no space for my ideas but I kind of face the woods so I might inadvertently plant some stuff:o and hope nobody notices and pinches it. I reckon I could do loads of tatties without anyone noticing.

I think my DH hates the idea that other people think he's poor or something, it's weird. I always ask him why he feels the need to give everyone but himself his money. Surely the money is best in his pocket than some provider of something?

I personally came from poverty and I feel truly blessed that I have the good fortune to "play at it" with money and hopefully one day I'll have some spare:D

    Eating TBH :(

Re the sandwiches it has astounded me for years. A few years back I worked in a set of offices which was set in a remote area near Heathrow. There were no shops nearby nor anywhere you could reach without a long drive by car if you had one.Despite the same company having 4 or 5 large office buildings in the area, they would not provide a canteen or restaurant facility merely allowing small kitchenettes on site for staff use and sandwich vans to visit.

The lads there would oftend spend about £5-10 a day on food never mind coffee runs from them and I used to think if they brought their own butties etc they could spend a lot less than that a week feeding their faces.

Not sure what I could give up. Eating or breathing :rotfl: Breathing is ok as it is free at the moment :rotfl:

Being serious I am not sure what I could give up. I have spent a little bit in the sales so outgoings will go down again next month. But that is about really and my own personal spending money.

This month has been good on the food front. Both had stinking colds for the last week so not been shopping and hardly eaten anything, Lost about half stone in weight as well.:j

It made me smile too especially the comment about the family still buying beans but 'the branded ones, of course'!!!!! I've eaten Netto beans for years my kids actually think Heinz taste yucky LOL! It's going to be happening more and more now though. There was an article in todays Telegraph about the cost of private education. Apparently in the last recession in 1990 a down turn in the private sector wasn't seen until 18 months - 2 yrs after. People will do anything than muck up their children's education it would seem. I understand perfectly even though my 3 are/were very happy & did well at local state schools. It'll be interesting reading to see what other topics the BBC cover on the subject though.
  • I guess now we know how much sales of baked beans have increased by, it explains the supermarkets extortionate rises in the price of their economy branded tins of them recently!

I completely agree with this. I used to buy the Asda Smart Price bacon offcuts to make what I considered to be the cheapest and tastiest soup in the land, lentil and bacon. It's still tasty :D but cheap? No way. I used to buy the bacon bits for under a quid and now they're up to about £1.20 or similar. Shocking.

I think supermarkets et al watch us consumers very closely and what we buy the most of they put up. They do it all whilst trying to kid us they "care".

Know that feeling! I had terrible flu over the Christmas, didn't want to eat anything. For Boxing day, I had a bowl of soggy cornflakes; all I could face. But I didn't lose any weight, boo hoo!

Recently I have decided to "go without":

    1) My 2nd freezer, full of stuff that MIL bought and none of us likes  Gave away/threw out food and pulled out the plug.

    2) TV - will switch off if me & DH are watching something but not that interested. Plenty of good books at home to read instead.

    3) Ummm... let me get back to you once I've had a think! :p

I have noticed the supermarkets raising the prices of value items - Sainsbury's value tomtato ketchup has always been 27p but since they had the big push to buy basics stuff they have increased the price to 45p !

So it is now worth checking the value price of things and not just automatically thinking it ust be cheaper !
It's not paranoia if they really are after you.

I've noticed this even in Netto! For example the pasta quills were 19p six months ago. Then they went to 23p, 29p, 35p and they're at 63p now!! Dog food the same. I always buy a 1.5kg bag of dried dog food it's been 1.39 for ages, went on Wednesday and it'd gone up to 1.69 thats a big jump! It's very annoying that the supermarkets can get away with this but we have no choice as we need food.

I have cut back on the car use so haven't filled with petrol since early December!

We have cut back on going out. We used to go for a meal out every other week, but now we have limited it to once a month.

We haven't really given up much else as we already made our own lunches and cooked from scratch.

We are not really suffering too much as luckily I had built a little safety net, so when my contract was axed in December it wasn't as desperate for us as it might be for others.

We have noticed stuff going up dramatically though - basics like tinned tomatoes, which I put down in disgust and bought passata from Lidl for 23p instead of 33p for basic plum tomatoes in Mr T! I remember when they used to be less than 10p not that long ago. The other trick is charging the same for smaller packs - packs that were 650g are now 600g for the same price, etc.
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D
