    Happy new year everyone.

We had bad news 2 nights ago, my hubby is being made redundant. We hoped he was safe but a big project he was due to start work on has to be shelved for 6 - 12 months so he has to go unfortunatley. The company do still want him on a freelance basis so hopefully we will earn something.

Just wanted to say really sorry and I know how you feel as we have been in this situation more than once. Also take some advice as from memory when OH has been made redundant, one of the rules of redundancy is that you cannot employ someone to do the same job within 6 months, otherwise the position isn't actually redundant. So if the project does miraculously start again in 6 months it could just be a cost cutting exercise in the interim (God I sound cynical  )

    Hi Mummysaver,

feel free to stock up on cranberry sauce regardless of expiry date, it keeps FOREVER! I still have a couple of jars lurking in the cupboard from sometime in the late 90's  when I picked up a crate because they were reduced to 10p per large jar. Because I make HM jam I don't always use the ready made stuff, that's why we still have some, but it is still good to eat!

I use it like I would use jam.

Thats what I do with the cranberry and orange stuff I homemade. I also just had some with grilled sausages for brekky and put this on my porridge in the morning.

  • Dear Lavidaloca and Tiddy Widdly, so sorry to hear your news.

I have been made redundant 3 times over the years and it's never easy, and I live in fear of it happening again now, when times are already hard.

But..... I have always gone on to bigger and better things, even if I was out of work for a while and thought I would never get another job. Thinking of you, sending good luck x

I had no idea of this. DH was made redundant (along with 6 other long term employees in the same position) from a large university 3 years ago. Within 3 months, they were advertising to hire more people for the exact same position (albeit at a lower pay rate). DH was quite angry at the time, as he felt they had purposefully gotten rid of the higher wage workers that had been there quite some time in order to replace them with lower paid workers, thus saving themselves money. Thankfully, DH is happier where he is working now anyway.

Tiddy Widdly and Lavidaloca - so sorry about your news. We too have been down this road and know what anxiety it brings. Do hope you will both see some light on the horizon too. Every day when I read the paper and see reports of more companies making employees redundant I think about the individual people and the homelives of those who are being affected. Such a grim start to the New Year for so many innocent people.

My sympathy to tiddlywiddle and lavidaloca regarding the redundancies. It is a horrible situation, and I know exactly the feeling of being punched in the stomach. I went through it when my then oh was made redundant and I was pregnant with baby number 3, it felt dreadful, but we survived, he found another job before the redundancy pay ran out and I went back to work quickly after dd2 was born.

I wish you all the best and hope that fabulous jobs come along soon.

Sorry to hear about the redundancies. I know how you feel. Tho luckily (luckily???) I don't have a family or partner, I was made redundant twice in one month at the end of last year and currently have no income. I wish you all the best and say stick on here . You will get some wonderful tips and ideas and the support here of the lovely MSERs will really help get you through. We are all there and remember you are not alone.

Makes me sad to see what is happening to good folk. My friend in Stoke who I haven't seen since last May contacted me yesterday to tell me that the reason he hasnt been in touch is not only has he been very ill with stress etc, his work is not letting up. His very small and understaffed team are overworked and the responsibility of maintaining contracts is entirely down to them and their work., If they fail in keeping the contracts the fate of 500 workers is in my mates hands, not only his own job. They have had a staff freeze for the last 18 months and my friend is getting soo ill with it. No social life for over a year, had to go to the docs for tests, permanently has headaches andflu like symptoms, is short tempered and is going grey and white rapidly. Yet this company will not take anyone on to help not even a temp and I am beginning to really worry that my friend will have a heart attack.

Sorry to hear some of you or your partners are facing redundancy, its a scary situation to be in but you're in the best place here to get loads of help and support.

The Kitchen Pharmacy is only on for this week and I've managed to miss most of them  which is annoying; I've put it in 'my programmes' on the radio times site so it'll be flagged it up if its repeated at any time, I'll post again if it is. ;)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Anyway, I use this board quite a bit but I think Im now going to be living on here. Im going to have to cut our food budget down significantly.

Thankfully I can cook from scratch. I have always done menu plans and food buying lists so I know what I spend. I dont use ready meals as my kids have some food allergies and I would rather know what Im feeding them.

So thank you in advance for all the help and advice and wonderful ideas I know Im going to find here.

So Sorry to hear your bad news tiddly widdly and lavidaloca :grouphug:. You will find so much support here, as many of us are in your position or have the threat of redundancy hanging over us. The great thing I've found, is that the help advice and general chat on this thread has kept me motivated. None of us are alone and chatting to other OSers helps to keep me focussed and stops me from sinking into the depths. I would even go as far as to say I am really quite enjoying managing on less and seeing how far I can stretch everything -I was never meant to be a millionaire :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: I couldn't stand the lifestyle:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: Good luck and try to keep positive.
